Copa Libertadores Futures (Round of 16)

by Amedeus Mastrangelo

Monday, Jul 10, 2023

The Copa Libertadores group stage has come to an end now leaving us with the final 16 teams on the road to the finals. There are some very strong teams left in the tournament, including some of the biggest giants from Brasil and Argentina, and it is time to see which of these teams has the best chance of making it to the finals and lifting the trophy this year.  To Win Outright Flamengo +350: Flamengo is coming in as the team with the best chance to win the tournament according to the books and for very good reason as this is not only one of the best teams in Brasil with their talent and depth, but they are also the defending Copa Libertadores champions from last year. Flamengo got off to a slower start this season as they usually do but now they find themselves in 2nd place of the Brasileirao and have been heating up recently as they are on a big run. This is a very good team once they get hot and they are very tough to stop once they are in a groove like this. They have the talent and the depth to make a deep run in this tournament as they are the defending champions and they usually get very hot late in the season which will give them lots of momentum going deep into this competition. Their defense has been sloppy early in the season but they will tighten up as the season goes on and they still have a very strong attack that can score goals both at home and away. Flamengo has the talent to make a deep run here and repeat as champions of the Copa Libertadores.  Palmeiras +400: Palmeiras is coming in as the next team with the best chance to win this tournament according to the books. Palmeiras did not make it to the finals of this tournament last year but they have won 2 of the last 3 Copa Libertadores Titles as they won it B2B the 2 years prior to last season and they are also the defending Brasileirao champions from last season as well. Just like Flamengo, Palmeiras is a Brasilian giant that is one of the best teams in the country as they have a lot of talent and depth on their squad. They have not gotten out to a great start in the league this season as they are currently in 5th place but they were rolling in the Copa Libertadores group stage, winning 5 straight after losing their 1st match at elevation. Palmeiras does have a tougher matchup in this round with Atletico Mineiro and that could be a big obstacle in their way to the next round, but Atletico Mineiro has fallen out of form recently and Palmeiras has also had their number over the last few years when they face each other. Palmeiras has a very good team and they do have both the talent and the depth to make a deep run in this tournament, but they have not been at their best in their league matches this season and their early performance in the Brasileirao this year could have a lasting effect on Copa Libertadores if they make it to deeper rounds against much better opponents. Some of the stronger teams in this competition also matchup very well against Palmeiras this year so it would not be shocking to see an early exit for them before the finals.  River Plate +600: River Plate is coming in as the next team with the best chance to win this tournament according to the books and they are also the biggest favorite to win for teams from Argentina. River Plate is a giant in Argentina and they have definitely been flexing their muscles this season as they have returned to glory in the Argentina Liga Profesional de Futbol, currently sitting at the top of the table with a big lead over 2nd place and only 3 league matches left. River Plate has also been rolling over teams in their matches recently which will give them a lot of momentum coming into this round, especially if they are coming off of a title win in their league. They are the best team in Argentina right now with the most talent and depth in their squad and they also have a scheduling advantage over some of the other Brasilian teams in this tournament. They play their last league match on July 30 which means they have nothing else to focus on but winning this competition when the Round of 16 starts in August. River Plate also struggled a lot last season in both competitions so now that they are back on top of Argentina coming into this Round of 16, expect nothing but the best level of play from this River Plate and they will certainly be a big threat to go deep into this tournament and win it. Fluminense +800: Fluminense is coming in as the next team with the best chance to win this tournament according to the books but this Fluminense side has definitely fallen out of form in their recent matches. Fluminense was one of the hottest teams in Brasil coming into the league season and this Copa Libertadores competition and they started off very strong in both tournaments but have fallen off in both since then. They did not finish the group stage off on a strong note and they have even been struggling to win matches and score goals in their league matches right now. Fluminense will have to start playing much better and get on another roll like they were on at the beginning of the season before they can even be considered a deep threat in this tournament, but even if they do there are still a lot of better teams that has been playing very well and eventually they will run into another club that will knock them out. Fluminense looked like a promising choice at the beginning of the season but they have regressed back into what they are and will not be able to put together a deep run in this tournament.  Boca Juniors +1200: Boca Juniors is coming in as the next team with the best chance to win this tournament according to the books and they are also a giant in Argentina with a very good squad, but they have not been performing well in their own league as they currently sit around the middle of the table and they will struggle against some of the better teams in this competition as well. The few things they do have going for them is that they do have a very good defense that does not allow many goals and they have a very strong home advantage with a much stronger attack there. The problem is that they struggle to score goals away from home and if they do not make good use of their home leg in every round, they will be at risk of exiting the tournament to a better team that will keep them from scoring. Defense is very important when making a deep run in a competition like this but there are also plenty of talented teams with very strong attacks and if Boca Juniors is not able to score goals on those good defenses, then they are not going to be able to make a deep run here with their away performance this year. Boca Juniors has no chance of going deep into this tournament as they need to focus on winning matches in their own league before focusing on a competition like this with the best of the best.  Racing Club +1200: Racing Club is coming in as the next team with the best chance to win this tournament according to the books but they are another Argentina giant that has failed to perform well in their own league this season. Racing Club has been a middle of the table team all season and they have also struggled in their away matches which will be a problem in this competition. They do have a very good team that plays well at home, but even in some of their recent home matches they have played very lazy and lethargic matches, dropping points against teams they should be beating, and there are a lot of much stronger teams in this competition for them to get through on their way to the finals. Just like Boca Juniors, Racing Club has had poor performances away from home all season and they have struggled to score in those matches as well. There is a chance Racing Club is not even in any South American competitions next year with their performance in the league this season and they are not going to be a threat to make a deep run in this tournament either.  RecommendationsThere are some very good teams left in this competition and with all of the South American giants still left, it will likely be a club from Brasil or Argentina who wins. This competition has been strongly dominated by clubs from Brasil over the last few years and Flamengo at +350 would still be a very good choice to defend their title as they have the experience and also one of the best teams on the continent. There is a team that can give Flamengo a run for their money though and considering the great season they had along with the scheduling advantages they are going to have as well as the talent on their team, River Plate at +600 is a very good choice to win this competition and return the trophy to Argentinian soil after so long. Flamengo at +350 and River Plate at +600 are the 2 best choices to win this competition but I am siding with River Plate at +600 to be the 2023 Copa Libertadores Champions.

Monday, Jul 10, 2023

In MLB on Sunday, we saw underdogs win six of 14 to close out the first half of the season. Yesterday's Big Dawg that barked loudest was once again the Washington Nationals (+185, Caesars) in a 7-2 upset of the Texas Rangers. With the win, the Nationals head into the All-Star Break on a two-game win streak. The Rangers, on the other hand, continue to struggle heading into the Break. Texas has lost 11 of 16 since June 24, despite a hitting spree that has led to a .286 batting average in that time frame. They've also smacked 23 home runs. It's been the pitching that has slipped terribly, with a 5.22 ERA over the 16-game stretch. There were five WNBA games on Sunday, and favorites went 3-2 on the day.In a battle of Eastern Conference powers, the Connecticut Sun (-4') won and covered in a 92-84 victory over the Washington Mystics. The Dallas Wings (-3') couldn't cover the number but did come away with a hard-fought 77-76 win over the Indiana Fever. The Phoenix Mercury (-1') continues to play better as they continue to get healthier. Phoenix knocked off the visiting - and struggling - Los Angeles Sparks, 78-72.The Las Vegas Aces (-11') rebounded from their second loss of the season by trouncing the Minnesota Lynx with a 113-89 road win.The Atlanta Dream (+2) won for the fifth straight time after going into Chicago and coming away with an 88-77 win over the Sky.

Big Al's Daily Angle: MLB Home Run Derby Preview and Odds - 07/10/2023

by Big Al Staff

Monday, Jul 10, 2023

The Monday sports card features the MLB Home Run Derby.Major League Baseball’s Home Run Derby takes place on ESPN at 8 PM ET at the Mariners’ T-Mobile park in Seattle. Eight competitors will take part in a quarterfinals bracket to determine the champion. This tournament offers a stacked field this year featuring a two-time champion, the record holder for most home runs in one Home Run Derby, and a hometown hero with a previous second-place finish in this event. The format places each of the eight sluggers in a quarterfinals bracket, with the batters having three minutes to hit in the first two rounds and two minutes in the final round. Everyone will be awarded an additional 30 seconds of bonus time that gets extended to 60 seconds of bonus time if the hitter has clubbed at least two home runs of at least 440 feet in length. Seeds are determined based on the number of home runs accumulated this season. The top seed in the field is Luis Robert Jr. of the Chicago White Sox, listed at +500 odds (all odds from DraftKings). He leads the field with 25 home runs this season. His longest home run this season was 450 feet. His career high was a dinger that was blasted for 487 yards. This tournament is his first participation in the Home Run Derby. The second seed is Pete Alonso of the New York Mets, listed at +300 odds. He looks to join Ken Griffey, Jr. as the second three-time winner in this event. Alonso won the 2019 Home Run Derby and defended his title in 2021 after the 2020 event was canceled during the COVID outbreak. He has 25 home runs this season. His longest home run this season was blasted 448 feet. He has clubbed 37 or more home runs in each of his MLB seasons. The third seed is Mookie Betts of the Los Angeles Dodgers, listed at +1000 odds. He has 22 home runs this season, with his long being of 426 feet. The veteran competes in his first Home Run Derby this season. The fourth seed is Adolis Garcia of the Texas Rangers, listed at +650 odds. He has 21 home runs this season and 79 homers in the last three years. His longest home run this year was blasted 436 feet. He is a debutante to this tournament. The fifth seed is Randy Arozarena of the Tampa Bay Rays, who has +950 odds to win this tournament. He has 16 home runs this season with a long of 436 feet. He is competing in his first Home Run Derby. The sixth seed is Vladimir Guerrero of the Tampa Bay Rays, who is listed at +360 odds to win this event. Guerrero has never won a Home Run Derby despite generating fireworks in 2019. Guerrero beat Matt Chapman in the first round that year with 29 home runs and topped that mark in the second round by blasting 40 homers to beat Joc Pederson. But Guerrero lost by one home run to Alonso in the final round to lose that Home Run Derby, yet his 91 homers in that tournament are the most ever in the history of this event. He has 12 home runs this year, with his longest one being 450 feet. The seventh seed is Julio Rodriguez of the Seattle Mariners, who has +500 odds to win the derby. The hometown hero finished second in this event last year after crushing 32 home runs in the first round and 31 homers in the second round before losing to Juan Soto in the final round. Rodriguez did defeat Alonso in a head-to-head competition in the semifinals last year. He has 13 home runs this year, with his long being of 454 feet. The eighth seed is Adley Rutschman of the Baltimore Orioles who is listed at +1700 odds. The catcher has 11 home runs this season with his longest being 424 feet. The lefty is a Pacific Northwest native having grown up in Portland before attending college at Oregon State. This contest is his first Home Run Derby. T-Mobile Park dimensions are balanced. The left-field line is 331 feet, with the left-center field being 378 feet away from home plate. Center field is 401 feet away from the plate. Right-center field is 381 feet away, with the right-field line being 326 feet. The winner of the Robert Jr./Rutschman quarterfinal faces the winner of the Garcia/Arozarena quarterfinal. The other semifinal features the Alonso/Rodriguez winner against the Betts/Guerrero survivor.

Sunday, Jul 09, 2023

In MLB on Saturday, we saw underdogs win four of 15 on the card. Yesterday's Big Dawg that barked loudest was easily the Washington Nationals (+175, DraftKings) in an 8-3 upset of the Texas Rangers. With the win, the Nationals snapped a five-game skid. But it's the Rangers who I'd rather discuss, as they've slipped into a bit of an abyss and will likely enjoy the upcoming break. Heading into Sunday, the Rangers have lost 10 of 15 since June 24, despite a hitting spree that has led to a .289 batting average in that time frame. They've also smacked 23 home runs. It's been the pitching that has slipped terribly, with a 5.05 ERA over the 15-game stretch. Thus, be wary if you're looking at today's game and very big price.I went 1-0 on Saturday with my A.L. West Game of the Month on the Astros cashing in for us. That made three straight Division Games of the Month in as many days. Now on an overall 31-22 roll since June 13, including a 28-14 MLB run for a net profit of $13,490. And over the L30 days, I'm No. 1 on the leaderboard with $12,460 NET$. Tonight I cash in with another rock-solid DIVISION DOG OF THE MONTH.The WNBA had just one game on Saturday, and the underdog Seattle Storm came very close to knocking off the New York Liberty.Laying 15 1/2 points, Breanna Stewart scored 25 points and Sabrina Ionescu added 20 to help the Liberty beat Seattle 80-76. The Liberty (13-4) have now won three games in a row, but have also lost three of four at the window.

Saturday, Jul 08, 2023

In MLB on Thursday, we saw underdogs win four of 12 with just three games being a pick. Yesterday's Big Dawg that barked loudest was the Colorado Rockies (+165, DraftKings) in a 5-2 upset of the San Francisco Giants.Seeing the Rockies win in Frisco was quite a shock, considering they were mired in a four-game skid and had lost 15 of their previous 19. Then again, maybe not, since the Giants have lost seven of nine and can't seem to find any offensive rhythm. Since June 28, the Giants are hitting a meager .198. Be wary of this series over the last two days before the All-Star Break.I went 1-0 on Friday with my N.L. East Game of the Month on the Phillies cashing in for us. That's two straight Division Games of the Month in as many days, as I gave you the Guardians Run Line on Thursday. Now on an overall 30-22 roll since June 13, including a 27-14 MLB run for a net profit of $12,490. And over the L30 days, I'm No. 1 on the leaderboard with $11,460 NET$. Tonight I cash in with another rock-solid DIVISION GAME OF THE MONTH.The WNBA had four games in action, with the favorites and dogs splitting the bill. The Washington Mystics (-1) covered the slim number with a 96-88 victory over the Indiana Fever. With the win, Washington halted a two-game skid both SU and ATS. The Mystics have covered six of their last eight. With my comp winner on Friday, the Dallas Wings (+10) beat the Las Vegas Aces outright, 80-78. The defending WNBA champion Aces, who lost for just the second time this season, has failed to cover four of their last six.The Atlanta Dream (+1) went into Chicago and beat the Sky outright, 82-68. The Dream has won and covered four in a row now.The Minnesota Lynx (-5) continued their climb back from the cellar by trouncing the Phoenix Mercury, 75-64. The Lynx, once in last place in the WNBA, have won and covered five in a row.The 11-day, 76-game NBA Summer League in Las Vegas got underway with No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama making his long-anticipated debut. And while the lines can be tough to figure out with uncertainty in the lineups, there tends to be one or two games pop up with pure value. Stay tuned. The CFL will be something to keep an eye on now that the season is well underway.

Vegas Writer's Daily Recap - July 7, 2023

by Vegas Writer

Friday, Jul 07, 2023

In MLB on Thursday, we saw underdogs win five of 12 with just one game being a pick. Yesterday's Big Dawg that barked loudest was the Philadelphia Phillies (+118, Caesars) in a 3-1 upset of the Tampa Bay Rays.Though the price might not have been indicative of what I normally peg as a "big dog," it's more so about what the Phillies have been doing of late. Philadelphia has now won three in a row, and since June 3 is on a 22-7 run. Built inside the win streak is a 12-0 road win streak. During their impressive 29-game stretch, the Phils are hitting .269 and slugging .444 while averaging 5.3 runs per game. The Phils close out a six-game road trip with tonight's series opener in Miami.I'm on an overall 29-22 roll since June 13, including a 26-14 MLB run for a net profit of $11,490 after hitting my A.L. Central Game of the Year on the Cleveland Guardians, a 6-1 winner over the Kansas City Royals. I'm now on an overall 29-22 roll since June 13, including a 26-14 MLB run for a net profit of $11,490. Tonight I cash in with a rock-solid DIVISION GAME OF THE MONTH.The WNBA got back in action last night with one game, and it wasn't anything to write home about. The Connecticut Sun (-10') made quick work of the Seattle Storm, cruising to a 20-point win with a 93-73 decision. The total stayed under by a 1/2-point. The Sun outscored the Storm 29-6 in the first quarter leaving Seattle its largest first-quarter deficit in franchise history. Connecticut’s All-Stars, Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner led the Sun in scoring, combining for a total 32 points. The Sun snapped a two-game skid on the court and at the window. Connecticut has won seven of 10 straight-up while covering six of them. The 11-day, 76-game NBA Summer League in Las Vegas gets underway today, and while the lines can be tough to figure out with uncertainty in the lineups, there tends to be one or two games pop up with pure value. The Consistent Inconsistency from Blake Snell Rises Again

by Team Del Genio

Thursday, Jul 06, 2023

Blake Snell has become a poster child for being consistently inconsistent. For the third straight year, the left-hander has struggled early in the season only to right the ship and put up spectacular numbers in the second half of the season. In 2021, the 30-year-old began the year by posting a 5.44 era and a 1.61 whip in his first nineteen starts. Snell then completed the season by registering a 1.83 era and a 0.76 whip in his last eight starts. In 2022, Snell reverted back to that early form of the previous season by compiling a 5.22 era and a 1.48 whip in his first ten starts. Yet once again, Snell made adjustments and pitched to a 2.19 era and a 1.03 whip in his final fourteen starts. Snell's increased reliance on his slider was credited for much of the success in the second half of the year. This year, Snell had a 5.04 era and a 1.56 whip in his first ten starts. The lefty then went in the opposite direction from last year by throwing his slider less. He struck out at least ten batters for the fourth straight time last Wednesday (June 28th) at Pittsburgh while allowing only two runs in six innings of work. Snell had not given up more than two earned runs in seven straight appearances. During that span of seven starts, Snell had a 0.86 era and a 0.83 whip while striking out 66 batters and only walking 15 in 42 innings.                                              Snell carried a 4-7 record with a 3.21 era and a 1.21 whip into his first start this month in a home game for San Diego against the Los Angeles Angels. He pitched five scoreless innings for the Padres to lead them to a 10-3 victory on Monday, July 3rd. The effort was his eighth straight start in which he did not give up more than two earned runs. While his double-digit strikeout streak ended with him punching out seven Angels' hitters, he continues to average more than a strikeout per inning during his latest midseason renaissance. He is striking out 31.3% of the batters he has faced this season, making it the sixth straight season in which he has struck out at least 30.9% of the batters he has faced. Snell's walk rate is an area of concern. He is issuing free passes in 11.9% of the batters he has faced this year. He walked four batters on Monday against the Angels, the most bases on balls he had given up in seven starts. He had only walked five batters in his previous three starts, and his 2.7 walks per nine inning rate in his last four appearances remains a significant improvement over his 4.5 walk rate per nine innings for the season. The lefty carries a 5-7 record along with a 3.03 era and a 1.26 whip into an expected start at home against the New York Mets on Saturday, July 8th, in his final trip to the mound before the all-star break. He has struck out 121 batters and issued 46 walks in the 92 innings that consist of his seventeen starts this year. Yet bettors might be more successful focusing on his 0.77 era and 0.98 whip in his last eight starts since May 25th. He has a 4-1 record during this run while giving up only four earned runs. By striking out 73 batters in those 47 innings, he is averaging a remarkable 13.98 strikeouts per nine innings. Snell can surely frustrate bettors early in the season counting on him to maintain his strong form from the previous year. Yet once the lefthander adjusts and trusts what is working for him, the inconsistent pitcher becomes very reliable.Good luck - TDG.

Vegas Writer's Daily Recap - July 6, 2023

by Vegas Writer

Thursday, Jul 06, 2023

In MLB on Wednesday, we saw underdogs win three of 11 with just three games being a pick and another being postponed. Yesterday's Big Dawg that barked loudest was the Oakland Athletics (+192, Caesars) in a 12-3 upset of the Detroit Tigers. It marked the second-straight loss to the Athletics, as the Tigers continue their struggle since late June. Detroit has now lost eight of 14 with a lethargic offense that is hitting .223 while its pitching staff has been hammered for 20 home runs and has a 4.79 ERA in that stretch. Opposing teams are hitting .270 in those 14 games. Oakland has now won four of five against teams from the American League Central.I'm on an overall 28-22 roll since June 13, including a 25-14 MLB run for a net profit of $10,490. And tonight I have my strongest play of the entire campaign, to date. My FIRST GAME OF THE YEAR is ready to roll, as I've isolated one game on the card that garners DIVISION GAME OF THE YEAR status. This one gets there by at least four runs. Don't miss this blowout winner, as we cash in huge. The WNBA got back in action last night with eight teams playing in four games. Three of the four underdogs cashed in last night. The Phoenix Mercury (+15, Caesars) lost by only four to the Liberty in New York. The Mercury are slowly showing a different side of their team than we saw open the season losing 11 of 13. Since failing to cover six straight, the Mercury have covered two of their last three. The Minnesota Lynx (-2) were the lone favorite to cover, taking care of the visiting Indiana Fever in a 90-83 win. The Lynx won despite Rookie of the Month Aliyah Boston scoring 22 points on 89% shooting. The Lynx are on a 4-0 ATS roll. The Dallas Wings (+13) led by 10 in the third quarter, but couldn't maintain the lead as the Las Vegas Aces remained unbeaten at home this season thanks to an 89-82 come-from-behind win. Dallas has covered three straight. Finally, the Atlanta Dream (+1') were dominant in a 90-79 win over the Los Angeles Sparks, who continue to struggle with injuries, most notably Lexie Brown. The Dream have covered three in a row and gone over in five straight. The NBA Summer League has gotten started, but the value there is tough to figure out with uncertainty in the lineups. The CFL will be something to keep an eye on now that the season is well underway.

North of the Border: CFL Week 5 News and Notes

by Sean Murphy

Thursday, Jul 06, 2023

After a lighter schedule featured only three games in CFL action last week, it's back to a four-game slate for Week 5, beginning with Thursday's Elks vs. Roughriders West Division showdown on Thursday night. Here's a look at some news and notes regarding the Friday-Sunday matchups north of the border.Big Bomber bounce-backWinnipeg suffered an inexplicable 30-6 rout at the hands of the B.C. Lions, at home no less, two weeks ago but rebounded nicely last Saturday, securing a 17-3 victory in Montreal. The Blue Bombers defense got off to a poor start this season but showed signs of turning it around against the Alouettes and now draw an inconsistent Calgary Stampeders offense in Week 5. Of note, Winnipeg forced four turnovers in last week's win after picking up only two in its first three games. The Stamps enter Week 5 having turned the football over six times through three contests. The Bombers check in a perfect 9-0 ATS in Weeks 5 through 9 over the last two seasons. Laying the hammer down? The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have yet to taste victory this season, off to an 0-3 start following losses to the Blue Bombers, Argonauts and Alouettes. They'll get another shot at their first win as they host the 1-2 Ottawa RedBlacks on Saturday. You would have to go back eight meetings - all the way to 2018 - to find the last time Ottawa managed to defeat Hamilton. The RedBlacks have to be feeling pretty good about themselves after notching their first victory of the campaign in lopsided fashion against the lowly Elks last week. Note that Ottawa rushed for a whopping 208 yards in that contest after picking up only 97 rushing yards in its first two games. Hamilton is a woeful 3-11 ATS against East Division foes going back to the start of last season.East-West showdownIf it's not the game of the week, it's a close second (behind the Stamps-Bombers) as the Alouettes challenge the Lions in Vancouver on Sunday. Both teams suffered their first loss of the season this past week with both of those setbacks coming in blowout fashion. For B.C. this is a bit of a tough scheduling spot as it travels across the country on just five days' rest following Monday's contest in Toronto. In that game, Lions QB Vernon Adams Jr. tossed six interceptions. Part of the blame has to be placed on him, but the team as a whole played an extremely sloppy game - the first time we've seen that type of performance from the Lions this season. Note that Montreal checks in a long-term 29-47 ATS when playing on the road after winning two of their last three games, as is the case here.
