NCAA Basketball: Texas Tech/Baylor Preview, Odds and Prediction - 03/07/2021

by Big Al Staff

Sunday, Mar 07, 2021

A Big 12 showdown between two top-twenty teams tips off on ESPN at 4 PM ET. Texas Tech won their third in a row with an 81-54 victory against Iowa State as a 17.5-point favorite on Thursday. Mac McClung scored 20 points, with the junior leading the team with a 16.4 points-per-game scoring average. Chris Beard’s team is ranked 18th nationally by the Associated Press with a 17-8 record. This group is likely his most talented team in his five years as head coach of this program. While he lost three starters from the team that finished 18-13 last season, he was aggressive in attracting some high-level transfers while bringing in a good freshman class to join junior Kyler Edwards and sophomore Terrence Shannon. Some of the depth Beard had established diminished when five-star freshman Nimari Burnett decided to leave the team to transfer to another school midseason. He was averaging 17.7 minutes-per-game but only scoring 5.3 points-per-game. McClung is a transfer from Georgetown who has adapted to Beard’s system to lead the team with a 16.9 points-per-game scoring average. Shannon is second on the team by scoring 12.5 points-per-game. The Red Raiders are once again an outstanding defensive team under Beard. They are 17th in the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency, according to kenpom. Texas Tech is tenth in the country by forcing turnovers in 23.7% of their opponent’s possessions. This team thrives in getting second-chance shots as they pull down 33.6% of their missed shots, 31st in the country. They also get to the free-throw line as they rank 17th in free throw rate. The weakness of this team is shooting the basketball. The Red Raiders make only 33.9% of their 3-pointers and 49.2% of their shots inside the arc, ranking 160th and 196th, respectively. Kenpom ranks their adjusted offensive efficiency at 35th nationally. Texas Tech improved to 9-7 in the Big 12, leaving them in seventh place. They have been defeated twice by Kansas, West Virginia, and Oklahoma State, with an additional loss to these Bears. They lost to Houston in non-conference action. Their highest-profile victories come from a pair of wins against Texas and Oklahoma each and LSU in non-conference play. Baylor clinched the Big 12 regular-season title on Tuesday with a 94-89 overtime win at West Virginia. The Bears followed that up on Thursday with an 81-70 victory at home against Oklahoma State as a 12.5-point favorite. Jared Butler scored 22 points to improve the junior’s team-high 17.1 points-per-game scoring average. Mario Teague added 19 points. The senior second on the team with a 14.9 points-per-game average. Matthew Mayer also poured in 19 points. The junior is fifth on the team with an 8.6 points-per-game average. Scott Drew has a deep rotation with nine players averaging over 12 minutes per game. Drew had six players return from the Baylor rotation that finished 26-4 last year. The Bears are 3-1 since returning from a three-week COVID hiatus. They rank third nationally by the AP with a 20-1 record. They have high-profile victories against Illinois, Oklahoma, Kansas, Oklahoma State (twice), Texas, West Virginia, and these Red Raiders. The lone blemish on their resume is a 71-58 loss at Kansas on February 27th. Baylor is third-best nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency, according to kenpom. They lead the nation with a 42.0% shooting percentage from 3-point land. They rank fourth in offensive rebounding by grabbing 37.1% of their missed shots. Drew’s team is also the 25th nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency at kenpom. They force turnovers in 25.3% of their opponent’s possessions, ranking third nationally. If there was a weakness to this team, it is with their defensive rebounding. Baylor allows their opponents to rebound 30.9% of their missed shots, 279th in the nation. The Bears do not get many freebies on the charity stripe, given a free throw rate that ranks 291st nationally.Baylor won the first meeting between these two teams in Lubbock by a 68-60 score as a 4.5-pint favorite on January 16th. BookMaker lists the Bears as an 8-point favorite with the total set at 137.Computer prediction:  Baylor 70 Texas Tech 64

Desmond Cambridge, Jr. led the team with 13 points, with the junior scoring 15.5 points-per-game. Sophomore Grant Sherfield averages a team-high 18.0 points-per-game. Steve Alford oversaw a Nevada team that finished 19-12 last season, including a surprising 12-6 in Mountain West Conference play, which was good for second place. Yet five of the top six scorers from that team departed, leaving Alford to rebuild this team nearly from scratch from bench players, freshmen, and transfer players. Sherfield is a transfer from Wichita State that was granted eligibility in the fall from the NCAA’s blanket transfer exception policy this year due to COVID. Cambridge is a transfer from Brown. The Wolf Pack are 14-9 with a 9-7 mark in conference play to put them in fifth place. They rank 98th nationally by the kenpom ratings. They are fifth in adjusted offensive efficiency while having the top free throw rate in the conference. Nevada is fifth in adjusted defensive efficiency in the MWC while ranking fourth with an opponent’s effective field goal percentage of 48.5%. They have a bad loss to Air Force on their resume while playing two close games against San Diego State in 2-point and 5-point losses. Their best wins were a two-game sweep at home against Boise State in early February before they went on a three-week COVID hiatus. They returned to play in their two losses in Logan against Utah State last week. This contest is the first meeting between these two teams this season. BookMaker lists this game as a pick ‘em with the total set at 144.5.Computer prediction:  Nevada 73 Colorado State 70

NHL Stanley Cup Dark Horses

by Sean Murphy

Thursday, Mar 04, 2021

As we approach the midway point of this unique 2021 NHL regular season, it's time to give some attention to Stanley Cup futures. Here's a look at four 'dark horses' to consider as we flip the calendar page to March.St. Louis Blues 23-1I'll admit this play has a little more to do with the lofty price than the team itself. I do feel the Blues have a considerably better than 23-1 shot at hoisting Lord Stanley's Cup. While there have been some bumps in the road, St. Louis has hung in there through the first month-and-a-half of the season and should enter the playoffs in second or third spot in the West Division. It's easy to forget that this is a team that just won it all back in 2019 - which does feel like a lifetime ago. With Alex Pietrangelo and Jay Bouwmeester no longer in the mix, the Blues have had to change their identity but I'm confident they'll continue to find their way. Offseason acquisitions Torey Krug and Justin Faulk have helped solidify their blue line, contributing 23 points in 22 games. New York Islanders 28-1I'm quite surprised we're being offered such a generous price to back the Isles, who currently sit tied atop the East Division standings. Perhaps it's their reputation as a perennial loser over the last few decades - let's face it, the early-80's dynasty is nothing but a memory at this point. I like what they're building on Long Island though, and certainly believe in Stanley Cup-winning head coach Barry Trotz. With the solid defensive system they have in place and their wealth of talent led by budding superstar Matthew Barzal up front, this is a team that could make some noise in what I believe is a fairly wide open field. Pittsburgh Penguins 30-1As long as Sidney Crosby is around, you can't count out the Penguins. While Pittsburgh currently sits on the outside looking in as far as the playoff picture goes (by percentage points only), I believe this is a team capable of going on a solid run and overtaking the Flyers for fourth spot in the East Division. We've already seen that the Pens can handle the rival Capitals, who currently sit top the East so finishing lower in the division isn't a huge concern. While staying healthy will be paramount with a lack of scoring depth and goaltender Tristan Jarry still needs to round into form, we're being offered an exceptional price to back a team that has the pedigree to go all the way this Spring.Calgary Flames 36-1This is a 'plug you nose and bet it' type of play as the Flames are severely wounded coming off six losses in their last eight games, including a pair of ugly blowout losses to the lowly Senators over the past week. I still like the upside they offer (especially at this price), even as they sit in fifth place in the North Division. There's no question Calgary's best hockey should lie ahead given its below-.500 record. I like the veteran leadership the Flames possess and feel they have a goaltender that is capable of getting hot and leading them on a deep postseason run (assuming they sneak in) in Jakob Markstrom.

NCAA Basketball: Texas/Oklahoma Preview, Odds and Prediction - 03/04/2021

by Big Al Staff

Thursday, Mar 04, 2021

A Thursday ESPN doubleheader concludes at 9 PM ET in a rematch between two nationally-ranked teams from the Big 12.Texas has won four of their last six games with their 81-67 victory at Iowa State as a 12.5-point favorite on Tuesday. Courtney Ramey paced the team with 14 points to add to his 13.7 points-per-game scoring average. Andrew Jones leads the team with a 14.8 points-per-game clip. The Longhorns returned twelve players, including all five starters from last year. Smart added a likely one-and-done freshman in Greg Brown, who is contributing 10.7 points-per-game and 6.9 rebounds-per-game. Texas has six players scoring at least 8.1 points-per-game.Texas ranks 16th in the AP poll with a 15-7 record. They have several impressive victories against Indiana and North Carolina en route to winning the Maui Invitational while adding wins against Oklahoma State, West Virginia, and Kansas twice. Their seven losses are against Villanova, Texas Tech (twice), Oklahoma, Baylor, Oklahoma State, and West Virginia. Their 9-6 record in the Big 12 puts them in fifth place. Smart’s team has also had several games lost this season due to the COVID, with both the players and the coaching staff missing time.Texas ranks 25th in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency at kenpom. Their effective field goal percentage of 52.0% is second-best in the conference. On defense, the Longhorns are 34th in adjusted defensive efficiency fueled by their half-court defense as they hold their opponents to a 46.1% effective field goal percentage, 25th nationally.Oklahoma lost their third in a row on Monday in a 79-75 upset loss at Oklahoma State as a 2.5-point favorite. These three setbacks were by 13 combined points. Brady Manek stepped up with 20 points, four assists, and four rebounds in the loss. The senior is fourth on the team with a 10.4 points-per-game average. He has started the last six games at center after previously playing at power forward. Austin Reaves added 19 points, seven assists, and four rebounds, with the senior leading the way with 17.6 points-per-game, 5.7 rebounds-per-game, and 5.1 assists-per-game averages. Sophomore De’Vian Harmon contributed another 14 points to help his 13.0 points-per-game average. The Sooners are ranked 15th by the Associated Press with a 14-8 record. Lon Kruger’s team has high-profile victories against Kansas, Texas, West Virginia (twice), and Alabama in non-conference play. Seven of their losses are against teams ranked in the top-56 at kenpom: Baylor, Kansas, Texas Tech (twice), Oklahoma State (twice), and Xavier. A setback to Kansas State that ranks 183rd at kenpom is the lone blemish on their resume. Kruger has over 70% of the production return last year's 19-12 team. Oklahoma is 36th nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency and 39th in defense at kenpom. The Sooners have been tough to score on inside the arc, with opponents making only 45.6% of their 2-point shots, 33rd nationally. But Oklahoma is allowing opposing shooters to convert 35.4% of their 3-pointers, 260th in the nation. The Sooners make the most of their scoring opportunities, with Reeves running the point. Oklahoma only turns the ball over in 15.5% of their possessions, ranking 19th nationally.Oklahoma won the first meeting between these two teams, 80-79, as a 3.5-point underdog in Austin on January 26th. Texas did not have starters Courtney Ramey and Jericho Sims and rotational players Jase Febres and Brock Cunningham, given COVID quarantine issues in that contest. All four of those players are back in the mix now. BetAnySports lists Oklahoma as a 2-point favorite with the total set at 143.Computer prediction:  Oklahoma 72 Texas 69

UFC 259 Preview

by Ben Burns

Tuesday, Mar 02, 2021

UFC 259 PreviewUFC's second PPV of 2021 goes this Saturday (March 6) and it figures to be a good one. No fewer than three different titles are up for grabs. The main event sees Middleweight champ Israel Adesanya move up to 205 pounds to take on Jan Blachowicz for the Light Heavyweight belt. At Featherweight, Amanada Nunes faces Megan Anderson. Additionally, Petr Yan makes the first defense of his Bantamweight belt, going up against Aljamain Sterling. The Main EventTalk about respect. Despite moving up in weight, Adesanya is still a -240 favorite. At 20-0, he's clearly one of the biggest stars in the sport. If he wins this and becomes a champ in two divisions, he'll already be considered one of the greatest ever. You may recall him disposing of Paulo Costo with ease in his last fight. The Middleweight champ will be faster and he'll be the more technical striker. Blachowicz has serious power of his own though. The big Polish fighter catches Adesanya with one good shot and anything is possible. While I do think Adesanya will get it done, I don't expect it to be nearly as easy as the Costo fight. Amanda NunesNunes is the biggest favorite (roughly -1200) on the card and for good reason. The "Goat" of women's MMA, Nunes has already done (belts at two weight classes) what Adesanya is trying to achieve. Nunes has dominated everyone: Rousey, Cyborg, Tate and Holm to name just a few. She can knock opponents out or she can choke them out. Anderson is a "knock-out artist" herself but she's outclassed here. Yan/SterlingWith a line of roughly a pick'em, this is expected to be the most competitive of the three title fights. Given the amount of trash talk between them, it should be exciting. The two fighters were originally supposed to fight back in December and the war of words between them has been going on for months. Yan had this to say: "He likes to talk a lot. He's a big mouth and sometimes I just happen to answer his tweets. For me, he's just another opponent, but I understand that he's the challenger and he needs to attract attention that he needs so much. As I started training and preparing, recently he's gone quiet. I don't know what happened. I don't know what happened to his big mouth ... " Yan went on to say: "... I don’t know what he's hoping for when he fights me. Is he hoping just to work his jiu-jitsu on me? I don't understand. I work and train with black belts so it’s not a problem for me.  I'm training to break him and destroy him. I can't see what he's going to offer me and I'm determined to prove to everyone that I deserve to be champion. I'm gonna defend this belt for a long time ... " Naturally, Sterling feels much differently. He had this to say: "Petr Yan has beaten up a lot of old men. I want to prove he's been the paper champ this entire time."
