Sweet 16 & Elite 8 Angles/Systems

by Kyle Hunter

Wednesday, Mar 22, 2023

We’re into the weekend of the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 in the NCAA Tournament. The venues have changed, and if you are looking for numbers regarding the venues and totals I recently wrote an article here at the Big Al site which gives detailed information about that. I know many people like to consider systems/angles that have worked in the past for specific rounds of the NCAA Tournament. Let’s take a look at a few that have worked well in the past. Keep in mind that these shouldn’t be just blindly bet across the board as much as it should be one factor in your overall handicap of the game.Sweet 16 Angles*Games With a Spread of 7.5 or larger in the Round of the Sweet 16 have gone under the total to the tune of 23-8-2 in the last 33 contests. If they had a closing total of 135 or higher, under is 18-4 in these contests.  *Sweet 16: Teams with an ATS win percentage on the year of 50% or lower against a team with an ATS win percentage of 51% or higher are 41-25 ATS in the last 66 contests. If you are fading teams with a cover rate of higher than 60% this angle jumps to 17-4 ATS.Elite 8 Angles*Underdogs receiving 50% of the spread bets in the game or lower have gone 27-13-2 ATS in the Elite 8 round dating back to 2011. The public favorites have done poorly, and the underdogs who are unloved have been covering the number in a big way.*Totals of less than 145 points on the closing number have gone over the total at a clip of 31-18 in the Elite 8 dating back to 2006. Totals of 137.5 or lower have gone 20-11 to the over in the Elite 8.Before you bet on these big games Thursday-Sunday consider these angles as part of your handicap and see if it can help get you an edge. Every little edge you can find is helpful especially when the lines are as sharp as they this time of the season. Best of luck in the weekend ahead!

Circuit of Americas Betting Preview

by AAA Sports

Wednesday, Mar 22, 2023

The Nascar season is five races in. Chevrolet has dominated the early season, winning 4 of the first 5 races. We’ve seen super speedways, intermediate tracks, and short tracks. Circuit of the Americas will be the first road course of the season. Austin, Texas will host the first of 5 road courses this season at the famed Texas Grand Prix, better known as Echo Park Grand Prix. COTA debuted on the Nascar circuit in May of 2021. The inaugural race was a rain-shortened race won by Chase Elliott. Because of Elliott’s leg injury, he will not be participating in the race on March 26th. Last year the Echo Park Grand Prix was won by Ross Chastain. His first ever Cup victory. The rules have changed a bit this season. Road course will have a new package allowing less downforce. Nascar also removed the cautions at the end of stages. Circuit of the Americas is a 3.14-mile road course with 20 turns and elevation. This asphalt track is wide, which should help see more passing than we’ve seen in the previous races this season. This race is filled with big names including the 2009 Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button. Button has signed on for three races this season. Another former F1 world champion participating in this race is Kimi Raikkonen. Raikkonen raced in Watkins Glen last season with little success. Jordan Taylor will be in the 9 car for injured Chase Elliott. Taylor is a two-time INSA champion. This race will be Taylor’s first in the Cup series. Indy car driver Conor Daly who raced in the Daytona 500 this season will make another appearance at COTA. We’ll also be seeing 7-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson in this race. This will be Johnson’s second race of the season finishing P31 at the Daytona 500. These drivers may see success at COTA, but it will be a stretch to see them get the checkered flag. We don’t see the usual drivers at the top of the board on this road course like Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano. Kyle Larson is the favorite this weekend. Larson has 4 road course victories in his Cup series career. His last road course win was last August at Watkins Glen. Over the past 2 seasons, Larson has a 9.8 average finish. In 6 road courses, he has 1 win with 2 top 5s. Larson has one DNF to go with that average. Kyle Larson always has a fast car and knows how to get around these types of tracks. +650 may not be the best price, but if he qualifies well on Saturday this line will move lower. Michael McDowell is a dark horse. McDowell was a top 5 road course driver last season. He had a costly penalty here last season for cutting through the course. In the past two seasons, McDowell in 6 races at road courses has 1 top 5 to pair with 4 top 10s. McDowell is looking to improve this season with his road program. I certainly think that is attainable. A top 5 for McDowell is +425, so we’re getting plenty of value here. If you aren’t comfortable taking him for Top 5 he is getting a generous line at Top 10 price at +155. Nascar betting is about finding value. Be sure to shop for the best number. Practice good bankroll management. Always bet responsibly.

Sour 16: Not Everything Sweet About Regionals

by Vegas Writer

Wednesday, Mar 22, 2023

We all know the upcoming games on Thursday and Friday - the regional semifinals - are labeled with sweetness for the final 16 teams. And as sweet as it is to see 11 different conferences represented, and seeds ranging from two top seeds to as high as a 15 still playing in this year's dance, it's important to recognize intangibles that work against every single team before investing in either side.Leave it to me to point out the SOUR SIXTEEN, 16 focal points for the remaining teams that you may or may not know, but definitely should factor into your wagering before Thursday and Friday.EAST REGIONAL SEMIFINALS (Thursday)Florida Atlantic vs. TennesseeFAU - In playing a defensive-minded team like Tennessee, the aggressiveness could often send the Owls to the free-throw line in this one. Problem for them is they're not a good free-throw shooting team. Florida Atlantic ranks 206th in the country in making an average of 12.4 free throws per game, while they're 202nd in the country attempting 17.4 complimentary shots per contest.TENNESSEE - The Volunteers may be known for their defense, but their offensive efficiency leaves a lot to be desired. Against a balanced team like the Owls, it's a cause for concern when the Vols rank 232nd in the nation with a 43.6% shooting clip. Tennessee's effective field-goal percentage ranks 216th at 50.2%.Michigan State vs. Kansas StateMICHIGAN ST. - There are three important areas in basketball that help teams on offense, and the Spartans rank terribly in each category. First of all, their 9.94 forced turnovers per game rank 339th in the nation. If they can't get the ball away from the opportunistic Wildcats, it'll pose problems. They also struggle on the offensive glass, ranking 261st with 8.91 per game. Second-chance opportunities are a must by this point in the tournament. Finally, they average 11.6 made free throws per contest, which is 272nd. KANSAS STATE - The Wildcats rank in the lower half of the country when it comes to 3-point shooting, be it attempts or made treys per game. I don't have a problem with that, because it means they don't live or die by the three. But they went from averaging 20.2 3-pointers per game through their first 24 games, but there's been an uptick to 22.3 over their last nine games - including 24.3 per contest over their last three. And, they're hitting just 24.4% from 3-point range in the tournament.WEST REGIONAL SEMIFINALS (Thursday)Arkansas vs. ConnecticutARKANSAS - The Razorbacks struggle with their long-range game, ranking 305th in the nation in 3-point percentage (31.6). And while Arkansas draws fouls at a high rate, it fails to convert at the charity stripe, ranking 282nd in free-throw percentage (69.2%). Also, Arkansas ranks 236th in assist rate (48.7%). The biggest area of concern is depth, as the Razorbacks rank 293rd in bench minutes percentage (25.9%)CONNECTICUT - This might be one of the most complete teams left in the dance, statistically, as the Huskies check the boxes all around, at both ends of the court. The one area I see being a problem since Arkansas draws a lot of fouls, is where the Huskies rank 262nd with 18.0 fouls per game. While Razorbacks may not convert their free-throw opportunities well, the last thing UConn needs to do is give them so many chances.Gonzaga vs. UCLAGONZAGA - Is this the matchup where the Bulldogs' propensity for being lax on defense hurts them? The Zags’ defense is currently ranked the worst since 2006, as it's sometimes been rather soft, mainly because it answers the bell at the other end. If they don't defend the perimeter better, the Dogs will become vulnerable against a team like the Bruins, who can hit from long-range when given space.UCLA - The Bruins aren't aggressive enough on the defensive glass, and they cannot afford to give Gonzaga second-chance opportunities. It's one thing to rely on 15.67 turnovers forced per game (23rd nationally), and a +1.44 assist-to-turnover ratio (18th), but when you're snatching 24.17 defensive boards per game (233rd), a team like Gonzaga will hurt you. Guys like Timme and Strawther don't need second chances.MIDWEST REGIONAL SEMIFINALS (Friday)Miami, Florida vs. HoustonMIAMI, FL - When you're facing a team like Houston, you better hope your defense can be as strong. The Hurricanes will need their best effort at the defensive end of the floor, and I'm not so sure the efficiency will be there. The 'Canes ranked 222nd, allowing 71.6 points per game on 44.7% shooting (244th). Sure, that offense can score some points. But this is the best defense the Hurricanes will have faced, and they'll need their best effort to slow the Cougars.HOUSTON - The Cougars are a guard-oriented team, but if they want to get to the regional final, they're going to need to get elite play in the paint. The Cougars rank 190th with their 62.4% 2-point rate against fellow D-I teams. And as defensive as this team gets, you'd think the Cougars would score more on the break, but average only 11.08 per game.Xavier vs. TexasXAVIER - This one may seem odd, but I'm going to turn to chemistry. Two Xavier players got into an on-court shouting match during a comeback win over Kennesaw State in the opening round. Guards Souley Boum and Adam Kunkel appeared to yell at each other on the court before coaches got in between the two near the bench. This is the regional semifinal, and the Longhorns are going to cause frustration. The Musketeers need to keep it together.TEXAS - The Longhorns struggle beyond the arc, ranking 171st in 3-point percentage (34.1). They also do a terrible job in drawing fouls, as they rank 166th in foul rate (31.9%). Match those with being an undersized team - the 'Horns are 268th in average height and play smaller at times - and this could be trouble against the Musketeers, who ranked 11th in the nation with 81.2 points per game.SOUTH REGIONAL SEMIFINALS (Friday)San Diego State vs. AlabamaSAN DIEGO ST - The Aztecs have always had defensive prowess. They don't back down from anyone. Then there are times they meet their match, and they don't know how to react. In facing the overall No. 1 seed in the event, the Aztecs can't afford to be bullied and pushed around. When another team instills fear first, the Aztecs have been known to wilt. This could be one of those times.ALABAMA - Off-court distractions, aka the media. There aren't many flaws with this team. But with all talks over the off-court controversy surrounding this team, it falls on coach Nate Oats to keep his troops focused on the task. There will be plenty of trash-talking, and the Tide players have to block the outside noise and play their game.Princeton vs. CreightonPRINCETON - One of the biggest surprises to this point, the Tigers have a very good chance at knocking off Creighton. They just have to be better defensively. Princeton’s greatest weakness when you delve into metrics is forcing turnovers, with a defensive turnover percentage that ranks 349th out of 363 Division I teams in the country.CREIGHTON - Defensive rebounding and creating turnovers were two issues the Blue Jays needed to address during the off-season. They're now ranked seventh in the nation with 28.66 defensive boards per game. Problem is, they rank 296th with just 8.34 offensive rebounds per contest, and still only force 9.89 turnovers per game (340th). Against a scrappy Tigers team, you need to create more second-chance opportunities, and you need to force turnovers to move in transition.

Why Is March Madness So Different From 10 Years Ago?

by Wayne Root

Monday, Mar 20, 2023

Where are the -25 point spreads?Ten years and before, there were an abundance of favorites laying 25 to 32 points. We seldom see those numbers. In order to give some order to that, let’s look into it to understand why. It might actually have you betting less favorites.  Playing for Blue Bloods Very few great players from our “Blue Blood” teams stick around. The hit the ranks of the NBA. Duke, Kentucky and North Carolina first come to mind. Because of the NBA rules, they can’t enter until their sophomore year so they leave just as fast as they came.  One and DoneThen there are other “One and done” players that the coach thought he was safe in recruiting and the player departing altered the team chemistry. Players that were unheard of at the start of the season.   Transfer Portal The transfer portal has players arriving or leaving as soon as their season is completed. Because it only takes one or two good players to turn a team around, they get to choose a Power 5 team or in the case for college basketball, a very good Mid-Major. More importantly, they can handpick where to go to be starting. Who wants bench time at a Top 25 school? Better Coaching The coaching has definitely been elevated. The coaching is better with younger and brighter. Additionally, during the interview, I assure you that the AD  wants to know if any players will follow the incoming coach. Mid Majors The Mid Majors are incredible. Its not hard to get two great players which is 40% of the starting five. The players are calling the teams to see what’s offered instead of a coach going to them. NIL is Gold The NIL is paying the players. Let’s face it, cash is king. But as a player that’s not in the top 50, why would that ballplayer give up a few hundred thousand by being a 6th man at Duke or Kentucky and make nothing? That’s an easy recruiting tool for the small school coaches to use.  Team Chemistry The chemistry is so much better when players are performing as a team instead of star athletes selfishly playing their own brand of ball that one season. With everything the small schools have, getting players to stay is a great opportunity for these coaches to go deep in March.  Absolutely!!Any idea where Duke, Kentucky or North Carolina are at this point? OUTI love the scouting reports that indicate: Four Seniors

Sweet 16 Venue Numbers Examined

by Kyle Hunter

Monday, Mar 20, 2023

As always, the NCAA Tournament delivered with great drama through the first weekend. We have a #15 seed in Princeton in the Sweet 16. We also have a team from Conference USA (Florida Atlantic) that is about to head to Madison Square Garden for their next game. The Sweet 16 tips off on Thursday evening. The Thursday matchups are fantastic, and the Friday games are solid as well. I wanted to take a look at the venues for the Sweet 16 matchups. Are there any numbers from previous games played here that might help us as we handicap these games?ThursdayT Mobile Arena (Las Vegas, Nevada) Postseason games played at T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas have gone 23-12-1 to the over in the last 36 games. The average postseason game played here has gone over the total by an average of 5.26 points. That’s a solid margin for a 36 game sample. There has been some talk in the past about the rims at T Mobile being soft. Arkansas/UConn and Gonzaga/UCLA will square off here. These are two must see games. I would argue that this location has the single best games of the week. Madison Square Garden (New York City, New York)Madison Square Garden has been one of the best under venues in the country. The under is 162-123 in the last 285 college basketball games played here. Postseason games at Madison Square Garden with a total of 127.5 or higher are 44-28 to the under. Those games have stayed under the total by an average of 3.55 points per game. In the last 310 college basketball games played at MSG, the 1st half under is a whopping 185-125 (59.7% unders). Florida Atlantic takes on Tennessee in an unexpected matchup at MSG, and the other game pits Michigan State against Kansas State.FridayYum Center (Louisville, Kentucky)The numbers for the Yum Center are a little more tricky to decipher. The under is 171-131 in games played here since 2006, but most of these have been home games for Louisville. That means the data could be more about the Louisville team than the facility itself. In neutral court games played at Yum Center the under is 12-16. That’s a small sample size, and most of those games have finished close to the total. The two matchups here are San Diego State/Alabama and Princeton/Creighton. T Mobile Center (Kansas City, Missouri)Not to be confused with the T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, these are the games at T Mobile Center in Kansas City. The under is 29-18 (61.7% unders) in games played at this venue. All the games played here have been neutral site games. For a good while this looked like a wash for over/unders, but the under has hit in 12 of their last 14 games played here. Is it statistical noise or is this an under venue? It’s a bit early to judge this one too much with a fairly small sample. Still, the under has cashed by an average of 2.94 points in this 47 game sample size. It will be Miami/Houston and Xavier/Texas in the two games played here on Friday evening.

Why Fairleigh-Dickinson's Upset of Purdue Was The Biggest Ever!

by Al McMordie

Saturday, Mar 18, 2023

The morning after the Fairleigh-Dickinson Knights upset the Purdue Boilermakers as a 23-point underdog, it was commonly reported that the Knights had just a 1.6 percent chance (going into the game) of pulling the upset.  And while that number wasn't wrong, per se (if one just looked at the universe of results for 23-point underdogs since 1990), it also severely over-estimated the odds, if one dug deeper into the numbers.  And digging deeper is what we will do here.First, let's take a look at the overall results since 1990.Going into the Purdue/FDU game, there were 272 games with point spreads at exactly 23, of which four resulted in an upset.  Simple math says that four divided by 272 equals 1.47 percent.  So, in the big picture, one would be comfortable assigning the Knights roughly a 1.5 percent chance of knocking off #1-seeded Purdue. But this "big picture" ignores a very important fact.  This game occurred late in the season, and in a post-season tournament, to boot.  And, from my research, it's significantly harder to pull off a massive upset later in the season.  Let's dive into the numbers.Since 1990, there have been 1,577 games with point spreads between 21.5 and 24 points.  Of those, the underdog won outright in 28 of 1,577, or 1.77 percent. However, 26 of the 28 upsets occurred earlier in the season, at Game 16 or less, while just two upsets occurred at Game 17 forward.  So, if one breaks the College Basketball season into two parts, it becomes clear that pulling off a monstrous upset is easier earlier in the season.Since 1990, there were 1148 games played where a team favored between 21.5 and 24 points was playing its 16th (or less) game of the season.  And our favored teams lost 26 of those 1148 games, straight-up (2.26 percent).  In contrast, when our favored team was playing its 17th (or greater) game, then there were 429 games.  And the favorite (including Purdue vs. FDU) has gone 427-2 straight-up.  Indeed, going into the Purdue/FDU game, only ONCE in 428 games (one-fifth of one percent) had a team, favored between 21.5 and 24 points, lost at Game 17 forward.  And that occurred on February 19, 2003 when the Portland Pilots went into Gonzaga, and upset the Bulldogs, 72-68, as a 22-point underdog. For this study, I chose to circumscribe the data set to a point spread range of 21.5 to 24 points, so as to not contaminate the data with the results of (even higher) point spreads that result in much less upsets.  But we see the same early/late season dichotomy in games with point spreads north of 24 points.  Since 1990, there have been 1,803 games with point spreads at 24.5 (or higher).  Of those 1,803 games, there were eight upsets (two-fifths of one percent).  And all eight upsets occurred up until Game 16.  From Game 1 through Game 16, the record was 8-1492 (one-half of one percent), while at Game 17 forward, it was 0-303 (zero percent).I believe the primary reason this happens is that the numbers for the oddsmakers/bettors are less sharp earlier in the season, due to the paucity of data.  So, teams could be over-valued, or under-valued, as the case may be.  And there's a much greater chance for a big underdog to pull off a shocking upset (say, if a 22-point dog should have been a 19.5-point dog).  But later in the year, when teams have 15, 25, or (in the case of Purdue and FDU) 35 games under their belt, the teams are pretty much who we think they are.  So, you won't have the types of mis-priced games that might happen earlier in the season. When viewed in this context, Fairleigh-Dickinson's upset of Purdue was the BIGGEST upset in College Basketball history (or at least since 1990, the year my database starts).  No other team had ever won as an underdog of more than 22 points, at Game 17 forward!Good luck, as always,Al McMordie
