2025 U.S. Open Golf Betting Preview
The 125th U.S. Open, teeing off June 12-15 at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania, is set to be a brutal test for bettors and golfers alike. Oakmont’s 7,372-yard, par-70 layout, hosting its record 10th U.S. Open, features 5+ inch rough, greens rolling at 15+ on the Stimpmeter, and iconic bunkers like the Church Pews. Here are a few of our thoughts on the tournament...
Top Betting Favorites (Odds via BetMGM, June 8, 2025)
- Scottie Scheffler (+280): World No. 1, Scheffler should fare well here with elite ball-striking (1st in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green) and his recent form with wins at the PGA Championship and Memorial. He’s finished in the top 3 at the US Open in 2 of the last 3 seasons so a top 5 finish at -120 might be worth a look.
- Bryson DeChambeau (+750): The defending champion (2024, Pinehurst) and 2020 winner, DeChambeau’s power off the tee is well known, however Oakmont rewards accuracy over distance. He hit only 5 fairways in the final round of last year’s U.S. Open yet still remarkably won. He’ll have to do much better than that this weekend or the long rough at Oakmont will be a problem. He did finish tied for 15th here in in 2016.
- Rory McIlroy (+1200): Despite a Masters win, McIlroy’s form has dipped (T-47 at PGA, missed cut at RBC Canadian Open last weekend). He missed the cut here in 2016 and has actually missed three straight U.S. Open cuts. He admitted struggling with motivation after winning the Masters this year and reaching the rare Grand Slam. Probably a stay away for us.
Possible Value Bet
- Collin Morikawa (+2500): Morikawa’s elite iron play (7th in SG: Approach) and T-14 or better in each of the last four U.S. Opens make him a perfect Oakmont fit. He’s currently #1 on the PGA tour in percentage of fairways hit which is key on this course where accuracy is key with ultra long roughs. At +2500 he is worth a look and a top 10 finish at +250 is probably our strongest lean with Morikawa.
Longshot to Watch
- Shane Lowry (+4500): Lowry has proven his worth at Oakmont tying for 2nd in 2016 U.S. Open and he held a 4 stroke lead after 54 holes. His game fits this course well as he ranks 5th this year in strokes gained, 23rd in percentage of fairways hit, and 36th in greens in regulation. He’s finished in the top 20 in 8 of his 14 tournaments this year and is a solid longshot in our opinion.
