College Football's Game 3 Non-Conference Superdog

by Tom Stryker

Friday, Sep 17, 2021

In last week’s System of the Week, we found some success with Vanderbilt (+6’) over Colorado State (WON OUTRIGHT 24-21) and we’ve got another nice underdog situation on tap for Saturday. With the help of my college football database, the same one that was featured in the December 13th, 2010, issue of the ESPN Insider magazine, I’ve been able to isolate and profit from a number of early season technical situations that have performed very well.   The unique system you will find below is no different.  It backs a team that has busted out of the gate impressively and now finds itself in the role of an underdog.  There is also a special parameter that can be added that makes it even more profitable.  Take a look at what I like to call, “College Football’s Game 3 Non-Conference Superdog.” Since 1980, PLAY ON any game three non-conference underdog priced at +28 or less provided they check in off back-to-back blowout victories of 20 points or more and neither team is rested.  41-Year ATS Record = 39-16-2 ATS for 70.9 percent  This Week’s Play = AUBURN  The War Eagle (+6) heads to Happy Valley off a pair of season-opening wins over Akron by the final of 60-10 and Alabama State by the margin of 62-0.  On the other side of Beaver Stadium, the Nittany Lions take the turf off their 44-13 blowout home win over the Ball State Cardinals.  Neither team is rested and that means AU fits this general system perfectly. There is one additional tightener that can be added that really make this system pop.  If our “play on” pup carried a team won/loss percentage less than .725 a year ago, then this Game 3 Non-Conference Super Dog system jumps to a highly profitable 35-6-1 ATS for 85.7 percent.  Last year, the Tigers posted a 6-5 SU overall record for a win percentage of .545 and they qualify for this special tightener. Good luck with the War Eagle on Saturday.

ASA's NFL Notes - In Case You Missed It

by ASA, Inc.

Wednesday, Sep 15, 2021

ASA's NFL NOTES  NFL – Underdogs went 12-4 the first week of the season – 9 of those dogs won outright!  The average point total for week 1 of the NFL was 47.8.  Last year games averaged 49.6 total points which was the highest mark ever.  Four games last week reached at least 60 points and one game topped 70 points (SF vs Detroit).  RAVENS – QB Lamar Jackson has not thrown for more than 250 yards in 17 straight games.  Their loss @ Las Vegas as a favorite was the first time the Ravens have lost a season opener in 5 years.  They are now a +3.5 home dog this week vs KC.  Last year they were a -3.5 home favorite vs Chiefs.  Dating back to 2015, Baltimore is 4-1 both SU & ATS as a home underdog.  SAINTS – A few of their offensive coaches have tested positive for Covid.  Something to watch as this week progresses.  Jameis Winston didn’t have huge numbers yardage wise in the Saints 38-3 win over the Packers (148 yards passing) but he did throw for 5 TD’s.  He did so on just 20 attempts so every 4th pass attempt for Winston was a TD.  Even more importantly, he didn’t turn the ball over.  In his 72 previous games as a starter Winston turned the ball over 119 times by HIMSELF.  If he protects the ball, he can be very good.  FALCONS – Atlanta was expected to be very solid offensively under new HC Smith who was the OC at Tennessee last year.  They looked OK to start the game last week kicking FG’s on their first two drives vs Philadelphia.  However, the Falcons gained only 77 total yards on their final 9 offensive possessions after getting 6 points on the board.  STEELERS – Pittsburgh went into Buffalo and won outright as a 6.5 point dog last week.  They are now 99-75-4 ATS as a road underdog since 1980 (57%).  The Steelers were outgained by 120 yards in their win @ Buffalo but they also ran 24 fewer offensive snaps so the YPP numbers were about dead even.  LIONS – Detroit was down 41-17 at home vs San Francisco on Sunday.  The final score?  41-33!  Detroit scored 16 points in the final 1:53 of the game AND had the ball at the Niner 24-yard line to end the game.  The Lions gained 191 of their 430 total yards on their final 3 possessions.  Detroit was +7.5 for much of the week but moved to +9.5 on gameday so those final 16 points were big for a number of bettors, win or lose.  TITANS – Tennessee scored just 13 points and averaged only 3.9 YPP in their season opening blowout loss at home to Arizona.  This from an offense that averaged 29.6 PPG on 6.1 YPP a year ago.  Their OC from last year (Smith) is now the head coach at Atlanta and the new OC Downing was the Titans TE’s coach last year and has only 1 year of experience as a NFL OC (Raiders in 2017).  Something to keep an eye on.  SEAHAWKS – Seattle ran 18 fewer offensive snaps on Sunday and still controlled the game beating Indianapolis 28-16 on the road.  The Seahawks averaged a whopping 7.2 YPP to just 4.7 YPP for the Colts.  Impressive stats vs an Indy defense that allowed 5.4 YPP a year ago.  Great debut for new OC Waldron who came over from the LA Rams where he was the passing game coordinator.  WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM – Well the exciting off-season acquisition of QB Ryan Fitzpatrick to jumpstart the offense when by the wayside quickly on Sunday.  Fitzpatrick left with a hip injury in the 2nd quarter after leading Washington to 2 FG’s in their first 3 drives.  He is now likely out for a few months.  Taylor Heinicke, who has 2 career starts, will now take over at QB.  BROWNS – Cleveland’s offense looked great on Sunday putting up 457 yards on a ridiculous 8.2 YPP and LOST.  Turnovers were the difference as they are in many NFL games.  The Browns had a fumble which led to a 23 yard FG drive for KC, the punter dropped a snap which led to a 15 yard KC TD drive, and QB Mayfield threw an interception on the final drive of the game which basically ended the game giving the Chiefs a 33-29 win.  KC’s first and only lead came with 7:00 minutes to go in the game.

NFL Week 2 Breakdown

by Will Rogers

Tuesday, Sep 14, 2021

Week 2BEST GAME – San Francisco at Philadelphia (+3.5)The 49ers’ confusing quarterback situation got a little clarity – if only temporarily – when vet Jimmy Garoppolo was solid (314 yards and a TD) in SF’s opening day win at Detroit. Granted, it was just Detroit, but if Jimmy G had peed his pants or – worse – gotten injured again, it might have opened the door for fans to scream for Trey Lance. As it is, Garoppolo at minimum bought some time and a start at Philly in Week 2. We’ll see if spending nearly a full cumulative day in an airplane (to and from Detroit, to Philadelphia) affects the Niners. Early SF money bumped this one up a half-point, to Eagles +3.5.WORST GAME – Detroit at Green Bay (-10.5)Whatever is going on with Aaron Rodgers, it’s pretty clear that leading the Packers to a title this season is not his top priority right now. He looked disinterested and confused against the Saints on opening day, and it will be interesting to see how Wisconsin fans will react if he turns in another stinker in the first home game of what is certainly his final season in Green Bay. Fortunately for the Pack, the Lions are coming to town on Monday night and things are set up nicely for a rebound, so it’s unlikely that Rodgers will have to answer some very probing post-game questions about his motivation, or lack thereof.LARGEST SPREAD – Atlanta at Tampa Bay (-13)The second week of the season, and it’s already back to the drawing board time for the Falcons. Losing at home to a mediocre Eagles team is bad enough, but Atlanta did not have a single offensive play longer than 18 yards, and the only offense it was able to generate came in the form of two field goals. Now the Birds have to fix things on the fly before hitting the road to take on the defending champs, who will have had a few extra days for prep and rest after opening the season this past Thursday night. Brady is Brady, and if he shows his age this season it will most likely be later on. Right now he looks fresh and ready to roll. This game opened at 13.5 and was quickly bet down to 13.SMALLEST SPREAD – New Orleans at Carolina (-3)After the hurricane, the city of New Orleans was in desperate need of a pick-me-up, and Jameis Winston stepped forward in a big way. Five TD passes in a win over the Packers and reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers? Anyone see THAT coming? Still, the Panthers are a somewhat puzzling favorite in this one after Carolina had to hold on for dear life in beating the Jets. Winston could be challenged in this one because the Panthers have improved their defense and had six sacks in the opener vs. New York. Long term, keep an eye on Christian McCaffrey, who had 21 carries and nine catches. Thirty touches a game is probably not physically sustainable over a 17-game season.LARGEST TOTAL – Kansas City at Baltimore (55.5)The opposite of limbo – how HIGH can you go? Four games (San Francisco-Philadelphia, Atlanta-Tampa Bay, Dallas-Los Angeles Chargers and this one) all have totals set at 50 or more. The Chiefs had just  enough offensive juice and just enough defensive lapses against the Browns for Over betters in Week 1, and no one really expects the train to slow down. The stars aren’t lined up for the Ravens defense, which had to play in Las Vegas on Monday night, travel back across the country and then get ready for the Chiefs on a short week.LOWEST TOTAL – New York Giants at Washington (41.5) (Thursday night)Under bettors cashed in on opening day, with 10 of the 15 games played through Sunday failing to reach the number. Blame the bookies, who know that the public likes to see scoring, and set the numbers somewhat artificially high to milk that tendency. The Giants and Washington both ran into defensive buzz saws in Week 1, New York rushing for only 60 yards (27 by QB Daniel Jones) in a loss at home to Denver, and WFT losing QB Ryan Fitzpatrick to injury and coming up empty (also at home) against the Chargers.
