Analysis
The Yankees took a tough loss last night, unable to score in 13 innings in Seattle after dominating the opening game in this series. A few big bats are out of the lineup for New York as the Yankees have hit a rough patch in early August but the disparity between these teams remains severe, +205 in scoring differential this season compared to +14 for Seattle. The Mariners are only 10-16 vs. left-handed starters and while he has not matched his early season dominance of late, Nestor Cortes remains a quality option on the mound. New York is 14-6 in his starts, and he has allowed two or fewer runs in five of his past six starts. His road numbers are nearly as strong as his home numbers and Seattle has limited experience against him. Robbie Ray’s Cy Young season last year has looked more-and-more like a fluke campaign as while he can generate strikeouts, walks and home runs are problematic. He has extreme flyball rates which figure to be a problem against New York’s MLB-leading home run rate. Ray has allowed 20 hits and 11 runs in his last three starts and last season he allowed 12 runs in three starts vs. New York as his two worst starts of the season were both vs. the Yankees. New York went 0-10 with runners in scoring position last night and while the Seattle bullpen has been excellent, that unit has been drained the past two days. New York is 23-9 vs. left-handed starters this season and while the team is in a bit of a rut right now, the pricing discount on Cortes is worth applying. Thank you for playing with Nelly’s and Best of Luck.
