Analysis
#965 NY YANKEES with Cortes (-) over Seattle with Ray at 4:10 PM EST In a bad mood off last night's 1-0 loss and with blemishes in six of their last seven games, the Bronx Bombers will be revved up and ready for this revenge battle. New York still owns a 10.5-game lead over Toronto in the AL East and manager Aaron Boone is determined to keep that advantage at double-digits. Sizzling southpaw Nestor Cortes will toe the rubber for the visitors. With a grand total of 20 starts in the books this season, No. 65 has been scratched for only 32 earned runs and 86 hits in 112.0 innings. Cortes has fanned 115 and walked 28 on his way to a solid 9-3 mark with a powerful 2.57 ERA. Nestor's last four outings have been impressive too. Facing the Cardinals, Royals, Orioles, and Reds, Cortes was nicked for just five earned runs and 16 hits in 23.1 frames. After the math, that equates to a 2-0 record with a strong 1.93 ERA. Left-hander Robbie Ray will grab the pearl for the home team. So far this year, No. 38 has made 22 starts for the M's and been cracked for 57 earned runs and 110 hits in 129.2 frames. That shakes down to an 8-8 mark and a 3.96 ERA. Robbie hasn't enjoyed much success against the Pinstripes either. In his last three performances against NY, Ray was roped for 11 earned runs and 12 hits (seven of which left the park) in just 15.0 innings. That's bad enough for an ugly 0-3 tally and an elevated 6.60 ERA. Several quality team trends support this investment. New York has won 39 of its last 54 when battling a left-handed starter, 46 of its last 68 when competing on Wednesday, and 26 of its last 38 when facing an opponent that scored two runs or less last. On the other side of the playing field, Seattle has fallen in seven of its last nine in its own backyard when matched up against a left-handed starter and 35 of its last 51 at home in this series. After getting blanked yesterday in extras, the Yankees will bring their big bats to this day game and easily extend the margin here. Take New York with Cortes. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
