Somehow, the Rays didn’t lose ground from first place in the American League East. They’re still 1.5 games up on Boston and 5.5 on the surging New York Yankees. The Yankees are on a tear. Just ask Tampa’s opponent for this weekend’s three-game series, the Baltimore Orioles. After an impressive 7-1 win at Yankee Stadium Monday, the Bronx Bombers took that moniker seriously with a 13-1 win Tuesday, followed with 10-3 on Wednesday.Overall, the Rays ended their nine-game homestand 5-4 with some important victories under their belt.“We knew that this was going to be a grind of a homestand,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “We were facing three good teams, all with good records, and we seemed to battle well with the first two and even Seattle. … It is nice to come out of the homestand with a winning record.”The Rays began a nine-game road trip at Baltimore on Friday. So maybe those past results are what the Rays need after a lethargic get-together with Seattle. Starter Shane McClanahan is expected to take the mound for the Rays; he carries a 5-4 record with a 3.74 ERA this season. The last time he saw the Orioles on July 20, he had seven strikeouts in five innings of work. Rays catcher Francisco Mejia had five RBI in that game, as well.Considering that’s only three less than what Tampa did the whole series against Seattle, this is a good time for the Rays to get their bats going.Fortunately the Rays got that from left fielder Randy Arozarena. The 26-year-old has a hit in all but two games in his last 10, batting .410 with three home runs. He went 7-for-15 in the Seattle series with two homers. We can’t say the Orioles don’t have talent on offense; Trey Mancini has been a tremendous comeback story, for example, with 19 homers. First-time All-Star Cedric Mullins is batting .323 with 18 home runs. There’s some exciting stuff brewing in Baltimore.Pitching is why they’re one of the worst teams in baseball. John Means has been the Orioles’ best pitcher at 5-3 with a 2.84 ERA. Then you look at the rest of the rotation. No other Baltimore starting pitchers have an ERA lower than 4.50.It’s baffling that the Orioles are that bad on the mound. If they had serviceable pitching in all phases, they might be a run-of-the-mill .500 team on the rise. Matt Harvey has won six games with an ERA of 6.13. And even Harvey is now dealing with knee issues. The stats have been an eyesore, but the saying about looking at an accident rings true in Baltimore.“Going forward in the outing, I felt I couldn’t quite push off the rubber and stay in my mechanics the way I needed to, especially against a lineup like that,” Harvey said after exiting the fourth inning against New York. “It was frustrating, because I felt so good early in the outing and I wanted to keep us in the game longer and keep the bullpen from being used.”Spenser Watkins is expected to start for Baltimore, which began their six-game homestand on Friday. They’ll face the Detroit Tigers three times starting Tuesday.TrendsThe Orioles may be good for one game this series. It’s hard to see how they recover heading into this series against the Rays. The starters are going to have to carry them. Baltimore is 1-10 (-9.4 units) following a game where the bullpen allows six or more earned runs.Following a five-game span when the Orioles’ bullpen has an ERA of 6.50 or worse, they are 3-20.Meanwhile, the Rays have found ways to actually bounce back. After a five-game stretch where they bat .225 or worse, Tampa is 35-15. As a favorite of -110 or higher this season, the Rays are 41-24.PredictionUpsets can happen, but things must really be bad if the Rays can’t rebound for a solid showing against the Orioles. We’d expect the Rays to dominate this weekend, and if it comes down to the bullpen, Tampa’s is the way to go. Rays win, over cashes. The Chicago Cubs are 3-7 over their last ten games. Dropping 2 of 3 to the Colorado Rockies, dropping 2 of 3 to the Washington Nationals, and dropping 3 of 4 to the Cincinnati Reds.  For a full list of things they have dropped I could keep writing this paragraph until September… but then I'd miss my press deadline. Series History: Over the last two seasons the White Sox and Cubs have split 10 games 5-5.  This Windy City series should skew things toward the White Sox, who will be dreaming of October (unfounded rumor), while sending the Cubs headlong into the offseason... to dream of April. These are fun rivals like Yankees vs Dodgers, Dodgers vs Giants, Red Sox vs Yankees. They share a city, a pizza and most years can only brag about beating each other. Statistical Comparison: The White Sox are 7th in team batting average, 8th in runs scored, and 13th in total hits. The offense is due to recover from the recent stretch of games that have disappointed money line betters. The Cubs are 28th in team batting average, 11th in runs scored, and 5th in total hits.  The hits are producing runs… These numbers make no sense at first until you look at the pitching stats.  The Cubs are 15th in team ERA at 4.27 but are below average in the league in runs allowed (503).  They give up more runs than they score.  That's why they are languishing and the batting stats are all over the place. Brian Bitler gives you Top Tier Bets!  Get Brian’s MLB TOP TIER bets at our Shop Picks page, where you can find all of today's entire Major League Baseball premium pick predictions.   White Sox vs CubsPreview: The White Sox will trot Carlos Rodon out to the mound.  He’s a lefty with an 8-5 record, 2.49 ERA, and 149 strikeouts. He’s 2-3 with a 3.55 ERA over the last 7 games, so a good game against the lowly Cubs would help raise his trajectory.  Only when 2 teams share a city do I get to say the home team is not the home favorite.  The Cubs are the home team for these next few games of the season series… but my mlb odds has them as the underdog.  The first pitch for the Cubs will be thrown by Adbert Alzolay, a righty, who has gone 4-11 with a 4.35 ERA, and 99 strikeouts on the season.  What else can I say about Adbert?  His whip is 1.18?  This is a middle of a series start that the Cubs may not expect to win.    Trends: White Sox:  The White Sox have hit a rough patch of plate, going 3-7 on the moneyline over the last ten while recording 7 Unders and 3 Overs.   Cubs:  The Cubs have gone 2-8 on the moneyline over the last ten games, while recording 6 Overs, 3 Unders, and 1 Push.   White Sox vs Cubs Prediction:   Our MLB Pick for Saturday August 7th, game is White Sox 9 Cubs 4.  Don't miss our champion handicappers free picks and expert baseball picks today.  And if you enjoyed this Chicago White Sox vs Chicago Cubs prediction, be sure to drop by every day for our daily MLB projections and previews.

They dropped 2 games to the Houston Astros, dropped 2 games to the Texas Rangers, and lost the first of this series against the Yankees Thursday night.  Seattle’s lineup isn’t the best in the major Leagues or even the al west, but they are still major league players and will have to rely on their top performers to get them back on track.  Barring Covid-19 or freak knee injuries, the latest odds tell us the Mariners are going to keep repeating the last outing and allowing runs against almost any opponent. The Yankees are 8-2 over their last ten games (will change with Friday’s result).  The staff averages have been improving.  If they take Friday’s game, they will roll into Saturday off their fifth victory in a row.  The wagers in this series should be on the Bronx Bombers.  Bottom Line, the Yanks are surging in the al east and should be comfortable with 7 home games to feast off the Baltimore Orioles and Seattle Mariners.  They started this stretch beating the Tampa Bay Rays 2 out of 3, so there have been quality wins.  The only mini-trend seems to be the 2 times they got beat they got shelled big time.  Any high school data classes will tell you a 14-0 loss to the Rays is an anomaly, a 7-1 loss to the Orioles means you don’t win them all. Series History: The Mariners are 1-3 against the Yankees in 2021.   Statistical Comparison: The Mariners are last in the league in total hits (795), last in the league in batting average (.222), but 19th in runs scored (466) so if they have one positive offensive trait it’s getting runners around the bases just enough to be competitive.   The Mariners are 18th in team ERA (4.49), 22nd in strike-outs (905). So while not great, the pitching seems to be what keeps them from completely bottoming out. The Yankees are 23rd in total hits, 17th in batting average (.236), but 8th in runs scored.  The extra runs scored come from having multiple power hitters in the line-up who occasionally knock one out.  Plus Anthony Rizzo has been coming on strong as of late with both solid play and a perfect New York name.  Yankees pitching is 11th in team ERA (3.75), 8th in strikeouts (1025).   AAA Sports won all their Tuesday and Wednesday plays going 7-0!!!. Don’t miss AAA Sports at our Shop Picks page, where you can find all of today’s entire Major League Baseball premium pick predictions.    Mariners vs Yankees Game Preview: This is the third of a four game series for the Mariners in the Bronx. The game results are not yet in for Friday night’s game.   The Mariners starting pitcher will be Chris Flexen (1.26 WHIP).  He has been just average for the season, but in his last 11 starts he has a .333 ERA and has been holding hitters to a .680 OPS.  The Yankees have never faced Flexen before so there are no data sets to compare. Similarly, he has never faced the Yankees which has a way of rattling guys and makes pitchers focus too much on wrist and elbow mechanics to block out the history of the pinstripes.  He most likely resumes his initial framework of average and abandons the 11 games of improvement. I see this third game as the Mariners’ third loss in a sweep series. The Yankees will be starting Andrew Heaney 6-8, 5.42 ERA, 1.32 WHIP.  This has the mariner’s lineup drooling a bit.  Heaney’s Yankees debut was not so great, he gave up 4 solo homers in 4 innings of work.  The bullpen should be warming up early and baseball info solutions has any number of replacement calculations for how many relievers will take the mound.  My money says that Heaney doesn’t give up 4 homers again.  I think he’ll settle in and throw a couple quality innings to help get this win. Of course with a nickname like Heandog, I’m not counting on seeing any record for strikeouts either. Trends:Mariners: The Mariners have notched 6 Overs and 4 Unders in their last ten games. O/U for the season is 56-51-3 Yankees: The Yankees have notched 3 Overs and 7 Unders in their last ten games.  O/U for the season is 45-60-3 Mariners vs Yankees Prediction:  Our MLB Pick for Saturday August 7th game is Yankees 7, Mariners 3  (Don't miss our champion handicappers' free picks and expert baseball picks today.  And if you enjoyed this Seattle Mariners vs New York Yankees prediction, be sure to drop by every day for our daily MLB projections and previews.)

The Cleveland Indians (soon to be Guardians) are 26th in team batting average (.231) and 21st in runs scored (454). The Tribe's pitchers are 22nd in team ERA 4.54 and 16th in runs allowed 488. What increases the Indians odds of getting this win is simply it being a home game. The host team here may be relying on an end-of-era name change to sell tickets between now and next year's first start. Larry Ness is 113-77, +$23,330 run.  Get Larry's MLB 10* Run-Line Game of the Month at our Shop Picks page, where you can find all of today's entire Major League Baseball premium pick predictions.   Tigers vs Indians Game Preview:  Miguel Cabrera continues his chase for his 500th career homer during this two-game series.  He is not the player he once was but knocking out a 500th against the Indians would bring the news coverage.  MLB picks aside, it would be nice to see that HR.   The Tigers will trot out (projected starting pitcher) righty Matt Manning (2-4, 5.59 ERA, 20 SO)  against the Indians righty Cal Quantrill (2-2, 3.40 ERA, 61 SO, 1.30 whip).  There isn't a world series contender in this match-up.  We already know that full list:  Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Milwaukee Brewers, heck maybe even the New York Mets.   No, these dogs are mired in an AL Central slog for who gets to come in second place to the Chicago White Sox. Trends: Detroit Tigers:  Over their last ten games the Tigers are 6-4.  They took the Minnesota Twins 3-1 and split a series with the Baltimore Orioles, but the two quality wins would have been against Boston Cleveland Indians:  Over their last ten games the Indians are 4-6.  The last win coming Monday night against the Toronto Blue Jays, they then dropped Tuesday and Wednesday to Toronto.   Tigers vs Indians Prediction: Our MLB Pick for Friday August 6th game is Tigers 3 Indians 2  Don't miss our champion handicappers free picks and expert baseball picks today.  Get off to a hot start this weekend, and get all of the daily expert picks on tonight's slate of MLB games.  And if you enjoyed this Detroit Tigers vs Cleveland Indians prediction, be sure to drop by every day for our daily MLB projections and previews.

Check out more of our NFL Best Bets at our Shop Picks page, where you can find all of this season’s National Football League premium pick predictions.Cowboys - Steelers PreviewThe first sign that normal times may be ahead. NFL Preseason football is back. One wouldn’t normally rejoice at such a concept, but it’s 2021 and these are the times we live in.The return of the NFL’s exhibition slate begins Thursday with the Hall of Fame game that we didn’t get last season. The Dallas Cowboys, with the hopes of bouncing back after a dreadful 6-10 campaign a year ago, will face the Pittsburgh Steelers after a disappointing playoff exit in January.Canton, Ohio will open its doors for a mega-induction ceremony this year. Twenty-eight members, combined from the classes of last year and this year, will be honored this weekend. Legendary Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson and Steelers coach Bill Cowher will be inducted, as will greats Peyton Manning, Charles Woodson and others. That might be the most exciting thing to happen because the Hall of Fame Game doesn’t normally produce on-the-field excitement. Starters don’t normally shine in this game. One player you won’t see is Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. Dallas’ franchise signal caller has been limited in camp due to a shoulder strain. Prescott has been preparing for his comeback after suffering that compound ankle fracture last season that saw him carted off on the AT&T Stadium turf.Prescott is expected to play at some point this preseason, but head coach Mike McCarthy said the club is taking a conservative approach before Prescott goes full participant in camp."I know we're early. It's early in training camp. I'm obviously trying to get to the season and get to the season healthy,” Prescott said. “That was the main reason … I doubt in a game that (an absence) happens."Garrett Gilbert has taken first-team reps during practice and is expected to start for Dallas. Cooper Rush will likely see some reps in the second and third quarter; the Cowboys are hoping to get some production out of their backup quarterback to see if he’s a capable option behind Prescott. The Dallas defense will get an early look under new defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. First-round pick linebacker Micah Parsons has been a standout during camp and is expected to challenge for three-down reps at linebacker from Day 1.While the Cowboys are trying to get back to the playoffs with their franchise quarterback in tow, the Steelers are hoping to get back to competing for Super Bowls again. If the Lombardi Trophy was awarded to teams that could win the first 11 games of the regular season and nothing more, there would be another silver trophy in Pittsburgh. But the Steelers fell hard after starting 11-0, finishing the year 12-4, and getting run over by the Cleveland Browns in the wild card game. It’s been 10 years since the Steelers last made the Super Bowl. Half of their playoff appearances since have resulted in wild card exits. August is normally the prime time for Steelers fans to have hope, only to be let down once again.Ben Roethlisberger isn’t expected to play for the Steelers, but this could be a major audition for Dwayne Haskins. The former first-round quarterback from the Washington Football Team is expected to play plenty for Pittsburgh.“I definitely feel comfortable,” Haskins said. “Probably when I first started training camp, I was just trying to get into a rhythm. Now being two weeks in, I’m pretty comfortable. It’s just playing the play and understanding certain adjustments.”Head coach Mike Tomlin might not be on the hot seat unless the Steelers miss the playoffs entirely, but the pressure is on to get back to playing for the Super Bowl.TrendsThe Cowboys are 4-1 against the spread as underdogs, but take that with a grain of salt. It being the first preseason game of the year, the total nor spread are going to be enticing to take. The total being 34 also screams an under is calling. Only once since 2013 has the total even inched close to 40. Only twice since 2005 have both teams scored more than 20 points in the game. The Hall of Fame Game is never known for its offense. Two franchises known for it, it’s not likely here.PredictionIt really is a toss-up. The first half will be key here, seeing which quarterback between Haskins or Gilbert/Rush/Ben DiNucci. Whoever gets the call in the third quarter will be relied upon to not mess up a great deal. It will be interesting to see Haskins in a brand new start with a more revamped offense. Steelers 17-14, under cashes. Don't miss our champion handicappers' free picks and expert football picks this season. Seattle put up five runs in the fourth and led by as much as 6-0 before Randy Arozarena hit a home run in the bottom of the fifth. It was yet another rough outing for Rays starting pitcher Michael Wacha. It was his 14th start of the year, 19th appearance overall, and only his fifth decision. The Rays’ pitcher allowed six runs in four innings on eight hits; the former 17-game winner has a 5.26 ERA and a WHIP of 1.38 this season. The Rays could also benefit from having their latest acquisition on offense to get rolling in the DH spot. Nelson Cruz, who was acquired from the Minnesota Twins on July 22, has a batting average of .206 in nine games. He went 2-for-4 on Monday, but only has 3 RBI since coming to Tampa. Still, at 41 years old to have that kind of pop, that’s a luxury to have in the two spot. That win from the Mariners might have been their biggest given the situation. After losing two of three over the weekend to the last-place Texas Rangers, Seattle got a 3-for-5 effort from first baseman Ty France, including a homer in the seventh, to put the game out of reach. Starter Chris Flexen won his 10th game of the year after striking out six in 6.2 IP.Seattle is still within striking distance in the AL West, though 7.5 games back of the Houston Astros for first place. The Mariners are three games back of the second wild card, held by the Oakland Athletics; the new-look New York Yankees are tied with Seattle.Logan Gilbert and Josh Fleming are expected to take the mound for Seattle and Tampa, respectively.TrendsThis is a major contrast in matchups, one that would normally favor the Rays. But the Mariners are a sneaky pick at the books. Seattle is 33-23 this season (+25.5 units) against the line when playing a team with a winning record this season.Tampa Bay has cleaned up as a favorite, going 40-23 when -110 or higher. When at home with a money line of -100 to -150, the Rays are 14-4 (+9 units).PredictionThe Mariners are a weird team. You expect them to finally break through and be a playoff team, but they falter toward the end of the season. Then they look bleak against Texas only to come back and beat Tampa the way they did. I think given another game to get the cobwebs out, I trust the Rays more to rebound here with the bats coming to life. Rays win, over cashes. It would take a drastic collapse for that to not happen. That collapse is very well within reach if All-Star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. is out longer than anticipated. The San Diego superstar injured his shoulder over the weekend and was placed on the 10-day IL. Padres manager Jayce Tingler said that end-of-season surgery is “on the table” should that be a possibility. So that drastic collapse is on the table, and the Padres will need to navigate through the weeds without their star. The Padres complete a short two-game series stint against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday.San Diego just wrapped up a six-game homestand at Petco Park, going an even 3-3. The Padres dropped two of three over the weekend to the Colorado Rockies; they avoided a sweep with an 8-1 win on Sunday. The onus on San Diego making a charge up the standings without Tatis Jr. falls on All-Star third baseman Manny Machado. The slugger has turned back the clock the past 10 games, looking like the Machado of Baltimore past; he’s batting .351 with four home runs since July 22.Entering Tuesday, the Padres are seven games back of the first-place San Francisco Giants in the National League West while currently holding the second wild card spot. The Los Angeles Dodgers have a 3.5-game lead for home-field advantage in the play-in, but the Padres need to be weary of the Cincinnati Reds (four games back, 7-3 in their last 10).The Athletics also hold the second wild card spot in their respective league. Oakland trails the Houston Astros by 4.5 games for first place in the American League West. And just in case you were curious, the Dodgers and Astros are in the midst of a two-game set and epic World Series rematch. Important baseball on both sides of this spectrum.Oakland is coming off an impressive stretch at Los Angeles, winning three of four against the Angels. Considering they had just lost four in a row, three of them to the Seattle Mariners, that’s a fair rebound. After wrapping up the set against San Diego, the A’s will welcome the Texas Rangers to the Coliseum for a three-game series.Oakland centerfielder Starling Marte has been a fine addition for the A’s since coming over from the Miami Marlins. The 32-year-old right-handed bat is batting .313 with four stolen bases in four games with Oakland. He might not be the difference maker in terms of hitting the baseball out of the park, but he’ll provide ample opportunity to bring in some runs.TrendsThe loss of Tatis Jr. certainly hurts the Padres in the books. On Tuesday, the Padres were a whopping +140 underdog. San Diego is 7-12 (-3.6 units) when they’re an underdog of +100 or higher this season, and 5-9 on the road.Oakland, meanwhile, is 42-27 (+4.7 units) when it’s a favorite of -110 or higher. Keep an eye on that number after Tuesday’s game. Pending on the result and how well Blake Snell goes for San Diego, that could dictate a lot.PredictionI think the loss of Tatis Jr. is going to hurt in the short term. Machado can provide the runs and the power in the immediate future, but they’ll need others to pick up the pace. Wil Myers is one to also keep a lookout for. The A’s seem just more trustworthy in this situation, especially at home. Athletics win outright, under cashes. Willy Adames hit a home run in the top of the first inning, and Brett Anderson threw 5.1 IP and allowed one earned run. He kept Atlanta’s best hitters quiet while the Milwaukee bullpen did its thing.Milwaukee isn’t going to be the flashiest team on social media. Whether you’re scrolling the Twitter timeline or the Facebook page, the current Milwaukee batters aren’t going to be a likable option in the algorithm that the MLB picks as must-see TV.Nevertheless, the Brewers are going to be one of the scariest teams come October. Between Adames’ power surge and the exciting outfield of Jackie Bradley Jr., and Lorenzo Cain, there’s plenty of reason to believe Milwaukee can be the social media contest darkhorse. In this era of baseball, is anyone really going to be surprised? The teams meet again for the second time in about a week. The Brewers completed a sweep of the Pirates at PNC Park, culminating in a 12-0 win in the final game of a three-game set during a tangle Thursday. But there’s a lot to be excited about this weekend for the Pirates, despite being obliterated 15-4 Sunday. The Pirates took advantage of a very tired Phillies club to take two of three and find some sense of hope for entertainment purposes.Part of that was Mitch Keller’s return to the mound for Pittsburgh. The top prospect pitcher went 5 innings and gave up four runs, but struggled on accuracy at times.“I think I executed a lot of good fastballs. I felt really good, confident,” Keller said. “I just think in the first and second innings, my breaking ball stuff was up in the zone.”Those behind him didn’t help. Luis Oviedo allowed five runs in relief, and Cody Ponce allowed four in two innings. The Pirate offense didn’t help matters either with four runs on seven hits. Philadelphia, meanwhile, put the Pittsburgh batting numbers to shame with 15 runs on 20 hits.Daily sports are weird like that, especially in the era of COVID we live in. One day you could be getting calls regarding your car’s extended warranties, fiddling around trying to get your fantasy baseball lineup set and maximizing your free bets. Then, all of a sudden, a Pirates team that just traded Adam Frazier and LHP Tyler Anderson can win against the star-studded Phillies team. No, the Pirates odds did not change with this development, but imagine someone making their first bet and winning this weekend. That’s how you get new customers to the fold; watch the team’s money line and go to work. Imagine what can change in just two games of this series.TrendsThis matchup is a bettor’s nightmare. The Brewers have been underwhelming as a dominant favorite; they’re only 9-6 (-2.2 units) when a favorite of -175 to -250. The Pirates are 12-19 (+4 units) when an underdog of +175 to +250.The reliability of any content when it comes to betting this game is bad. It’s a full list of shenanigans. When runners get on base, who’s going to come through? Projected starting pitcher Eric Lauer is 3-4 this season for the Brewers when they’re a favorite of -110 or higher. Factor in his career era of 4.57 and it could be a mess.Milwaukee will feel much better when RHP Freddy Peralta gets on the mound this series.Bryse Wilson for the Pirates is 1-1 as an underdog of +100 or more. This game favors offense with first pitch right at the evening. Plus, the Brewers have to feel good the way they’re slugging. Hopefully the weather forecast is on the right side of things.PredictionThe Pirates won the Battle of PA, much to the fans of Pittsburgh’s delight. They’ve needed something to cheer for. Unfortunately, that’s where the good fun ends. Newsrooms and news coverage will soon find the Brewers to be a fun team. If you can access USA Today Sports, tell them you need more Brewers in your life because they’re camping in the box with a few RBI their way.Don't miss our champion handicappers' free picks and expert baseball picks today.  And if you enjoyed this Pittsburgh Pirates - Milwaukee Brewers prediction, be sure to drop by every day for our daily MLB projections and previews.

The Mets will begin a four-game road set against the Miami Marlins on Monday, the start of a seven-game road trip.“That’s the biggest thing that motivates me to be out there, that I play for the fans,” Baez said Saturday. “The love for the fans means so much to me. The love that they showed me tonight, it was really special.”Baez hit a two-run home run in his Mets debut, a high fastball from Wade Miley that was destroyed to left field. That was his only hit. Baez followed that with an 0-for-4 performance on Sunday. The second baseman brought to provide an offensive surge did not show up in what was a rough day for Marcus Stroman (5.2 IP, 4 ER, 1 BB).“There was a sample today of the things that have gotten us in trouble,” Mets manager Luis Rojas said. “I think we’ve just got to be more stubborn with our approach. We’ve got to believe in it more.”The Mets are limping in first place in the NL East, but the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves have since gained ground. The Phillies are 3.5 games back and will welcome the Mets for a three-game set on Friday. The Braves are now four games back. New York is still without prize acquisition Francisco Lindor, who hasn’t played since July 16. They now have to wave through the weeds without starting pitcher and ace Jacob deGrom, who is out until September with inflammation of the forearm. The right-hander was initially shut down for two weeks before another evaluation kept him out longer. The Marlins were at the epicenter of the MLB landscape this weekend, but not because they’re in the position of winning anything this year. The new-look New York Yankees, highlighted by the acquisitions of Joey Gallo and Anthony Rizzo, spearheaded a three-game series sweep in Miami this past weekend.Miami scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the first inning and took the lead into the eighth before Rizzo tied the game with a single. New York went on to win 3-1 and hand the Marlins their fourth straight loss. When we got here, I told you what was going to happen,” said Marlins CEO Derek Jeter, one of the greatest Yankees players of all time. “I think we’re taking steps in the right direction to get there, but we have to get better on the field here in Miami.”Jeter’s era was a combination of hitting the baseball for contact, sometimes power, and letting the aces take care of work. Right now, the Marlins aren’t there in either of those respects. Maybe they have something with Sandy Alcantara and his 10 strikeouts on Sunday, but after trading Starling Marte before the trade deadline to Oakland, there’s not much to be had as an eye-popping star like Jeter once was. These next couple of weeks will go a long way to see where the Marlins are; after the four-game set against New York, they have a chance to continue to grow in an NL West road trip with three against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, and the San Diego Padres -- who now have to fight through a stretch without Fernando Tatis Jr., all while trying to catch up to the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants. The Marlins have combined for 13 runs in their past five games after scoring 23 in the previous three.“I threw seven innings today, great outing by me. My position players behind me, they did a great job, too, but we lost the game,” Alcantara said. “It is what it is, and we're going to keep working hard and keep playing the game.”TrendsThis matchup has all the makings of a flip-flop depending on where the bets go. The Mets have not been a solid betting team except if they’ve been a resounding favorite; New York is 22-12 as a favorite of -125 to -175. Tylor Megill, their projected starter, has not done enough to warrant if he’s a reliable option on Monday (3-1 as a favorite of -110 or higher). The Marlins are 25-42 as an underdog as a whole, but they are 4-0-1 in their last five following a game when scoring two runs or less. Jesus Luzardo, expecting to start for Miami, is undefeated with Miami as an underdog with the under cashing each time.It doesn’t sound like a game that will feature a lot of runs unless these pitchers implode. The under has cashed in six of the last seven. The best bets seem like to play the under heavily, even at a total like 7.PredictionI blame no one taking the home dog here. The Mets really can’t be trusted until something materializes with them offensively. It may take time, but for this one game, I trust Baez and Pete Alonso to get some offense going. It won’t be a lot, but just enough. Mets win 4-2, under cashes. They’ve made a major trade deadline acquisition to their pitching staff. Now, they’re on a little winning stretch with some more home cooking to come.Toronto will continue their 11-game home stretch Monday as it begins a four-game series against the Cleveland Indians. The Blue Jays are on a four-game winning streak and have won five of six following their three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals. For all the talk of the moves the other American League East teams made, Toronto bolstered its starting rotation by adding 27-year-old Jose Berrios. The former Minnesota Twins starter threw six innings of scoreless ball while striking out seven in his Toronto debut, a 5-1 victory for the home team.Toronto is staring up at the Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees, but the gap is closing. The Blue Jays are three games back of the second wild card spot, currently held by the Oakland Athletics, and 7.5 back of the first-place Rays. The Jays hope Berrios, and a return home after a long stint in Buffalo, will propel a playoff push. George Springer went 1-for-3 on Sunday after a two-home-run game Saturday; the first such game for Toronto’s prized free-agent acquisition last offseason.“Obviously, I didn’t have a lot of game reps under my belt and hadn’t faced a Major League pitching staff or team in a long time,” Springer said Saturday. “I just think reps, at-bats, and I keep going out there every day and keep working towards the ultimate goal, which is winning.”If Springer’s bat comes alive, that will aid destroyer of baseball Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who remains on a Triple Crown-like pace. It might be difficult to catch Shohei Ohtani on the home run pace, but there’s a chance. It may not be Edwin Encarnacion, Jose Bautista and Josh Donaldson bringing the thunder anymore, but there’s a ton of pop in that lineup.Toronto may be a year away from being compared to its stretch of American League Championship Series appearances in 2015 and 2016, but this is a sneaky team that has the ability to catch fire right away. The Blue Jays are +3000 to win it all at some online books. It wouldn’t hurt to put a few bucks down as the regular season continues to wind down. The Blue Jays welcome an Indians team in the midst of a seven-game road trip; they haven’t been at Progressive Field since July 28. Cleveland has alternated wins and losses in its past five games entering Sunday; they’re wrapping up a three-game road set against the first-place Chicago White Sox. Cleveland won 12-11 on Saturday led by homers from Amed Rosario, Owen Miller and Austin Hedges. It’s been a down year for the soon-to-be-named Guardians. They’re on pace to miss the playoffs for only the second time since reaching the World Series in 2016, but will have to finish the rest of this season without manager Terry Francona due to health issues.Plus, they’ve been down starting pitchers Aaron Civale and Shane Bieber. Poor rookie left-hander Sam Hentges is getting lit up this season with Cleveland trying to win by committee.Eli Morgan and Robbie Ray are expected to be on the mound for Cleveland and Toronto, respectively, on Monday.TrendsThe books are reacting to Toronto’s recent winning ways with that high moneyline number. At time of publishing, it’s gone down to -270 in some areas but some books are keeping that opening number. The Indians haven’t done well as a heavy dog; they’re 2-7 when their line is between +175 to +250. That’s the MLB for you.The Indians, however, are 7-3 in the last 10 meetings against Toronto. The under has also cashed in 15 of the previous 21 meetings at the Blue Jays’ barn.PredictionYou get the sense the Blue Jays are trying to make a push. Now that they’re back home in the comfort of their home field, I wonder how much they will take advantage of this stretch that’s been put on a silver platter for them. Blue Jays win, with the under. Do they have enough pitching and offense to contend with the NL West triad? They got off to a good start by defeating the Atlanta Braves 9-5 in the first game of the three-game series Friday night. The National League Central leaders improved to 20 games above .500 for the first time since 2018. That squad was one win away from a spot in the World Series.Perhaps some deja vu on the horizon? The same resiliency that 2018 crew showed was on display Friday. After starting pitcher Corbin Burnes gave up four runs in the first inning, the Brewers put up four runs in the third and fourth innings each to pull away. Avisail Garcia had three of those RBIs.“Some of the criticism of the offense was at the beginning of the season and was for a fairly short stretch, in my opinion,” Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said. “Getting down 4-0 is not a recipe for winning baseball games. So, we did a nice job tonight.”The Brewers entered Saturday’s contest seven games clear of the red-hot Cincinnati Reds in the division.Milwaukee looked good after its ace got rocked, aided by homers from Willy Adames and Garcia. The Brewers showed at least they can get through any of the teams coming out of the NL East. But the Braves are still very much in the playoff discussion. Even without Ronald Acuna Jr. out for the rest of the year, they’ve still got enough pop from the middle of their lineup. Austin Riley hit his 22nd home run during Friday’s matchup, but the offense significantly cooled after the four-run first. Atlanta is only four games back of the New York Mets for first place in the east, and trail the Philadelphia Phillies by a half game for second. It wasn’t a fun night for both pitchers. Braves right-hander Touki Toussaint lasted only 3.1 innings and allowed seven runs in the contest. The Brewers have been on a scoring tear during their four-game winning streak, outsourcing opponents by a whopping 37-8. To be fair, three came by way of a sweep against the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates, but it’s been hard to find teams that have taken care of business the way Milwaukee has in recent weeks. They’ll try to make it five straight Saturday with Brandon Woodruff on the mound.TrendsThe Brewers are absolutely capable of sweeping this series seeing how they’ve continuously swung the bats well. The key will be Brett Anderson. The Brewers’ starter has faced Atlanta three times in his career, going 1-2. His appearance on May 15, a 5-1 loss to Atlanta, was his first meeting against first baseman Freddie Freeman and his crew since July 21, 2015. He allowed four earned runs that game but the under cashed.Charlie Morton, Atlanta’s projected starter, is 4-7 all-time against Milwaukee with a 4.23 ERA. So if you were looking for a pitching advantage here, good luck. The Braves are 7-8 in those starts and the under is 8-6 (+0.8 units).Seeing how the money has swayed toward Atlanta for the traditional Sunday afternoon matchup, this looks like the perfect time to ride the Milwaukee bats as long as you can, seeing how they’re 29-14 in day games. The Brewers are 14-10 as an underdog from +100 to +150. Understandably, this number will move by the time the second game of this set ends. The Braves are a .500 team (19-19) when favorites.PredictionI’ll be curious to see how much Milwaukee keeps this going. The more Cincinnati and Joey Votto keep putting up wins, the pressure will be on. So far, they’ve been able to keep things even-keeled. Take the Brewers while this number is hot, and go for the over. Brewers 9, Braves 5. But as we say goodbye to July, it’s the Chicago White Sox taking hold of the AL Central and the Tigers playing for pride. The Orioles are attempting to play for pride, and their post-deadline run began with a 4-3 win at Detroit on Friday. Matt Harvey (remember him?) threw 6.1 scoreless IP to get Baltimore just over the finish line.“I’m not trying to pitch the way I used to, which was mostly fastballs and sliders," Harvey said. "Pitching backwards, just trusting my stuff and trying to mix things up. Being unpredictable. When I was throwing 97-100 mph with a 92-93 mph slider, things were a little easier.”The Tigers scored three runs in the eighth but couldn’t do enough despite the strong effort from Detroit’s bullpen. Starting pitcher Tarik Skubal allowed all four runs in 5.2 innings of work.Miguel Cabrera turned back the clock going 2-for-3 with an RBI on Friday. For one day, his .251 batting average didn’t seem like a bad thing. Cabrera nearly brought the house down with a potential winning grand slam before it was tracked down at the warning track. The future hall-of-famer is three home runs from 500 in his career.“I come from Maracay, in a little neighborhood. I never think it's going to happen to me. It's really special,” Cabrera said. “I have to say thank you to the team, thank you to the city for giving me this opportunity to be here. It's exciting.”At time of publishing, the teams have not played their Saturday game as of yet, so a lot can change leading up to Sunday’s matchup. Spenser Watkins will take the mound for Baltimore on Sunday, and Tyler Alexander for Detroit. The Tigers enter Saturday having won 10 of their past 11 at home.TrendsThe under has cashed in five of the last six Orioles games when they’re an underdog.
