Analysis: 3 Unit Play. Take 24517 Alonzo Menifield to win over Jimmy Crute (7:10 pm Saturday, February 2/11 on ESPN PPV). This fight should be exciting. Jimmy Crute was a rising star and started his UFC career on a three-fight win streak, but once he stepped up in competition he started to get finished, losing three of his last five fights. His last two loses were brutal. He destroyed his knee leading to reconstructive surgery after his fight with Anthony Smith (the doctor had to stop the fight). I feel he returned too quick to face Jamahal Hill, where he was promptly TKO’d in the first round. Now that he has taken over year to heal, is he the same fighter he once was? With all that being said, I’m not sure he would have beaten Menifield in his prime. Menifield can end any UFC fighter with one punch. He has a solid clinch game and can really neutralize his opponents up against the fence. This can be done to his detriment, as he needs to learn to land strikes against the cage to win rounds. I feel he makes this adjustment this time out. With the injury issues with Jimmy’s knee and a cracked chin in his last fight I don’t feel he should be favored against a very solid power puncher in Mennifield. Can his knee hold up to a solid leg kick? Has he taken his year off seriously? How long was he able to train with the time required for healing? There are way too many issues to not take the big plus money here on Mennifield.
