Analysis
Our 20* NCAA-B Friday Afternoon Vegas Jackpot is on Purdue minus the points versus Yale at 2 PM ET. The Yale Bulldogs won the Ivy League tournament by upsetting Princeton last Sunday, 66-64, as a 3-point underdog. The Bulldogs made 46.2% of their shots from the field while watching the Tigers miss open look after open look and end the game making only 41.0% of their shots. Yale will not be so lucky this afternoon against an angry Boilermakers team. The oddsmakers have installed Purdue as a healthy favorite in the 15 to 16 point range yet it will be difficult for the Bulldogs to stay within that margin because of their style of play. Head coach James Jones’ team led the Ivy in offensive rebounding but they rebounded just under 28% of their missed shots in a conference that generally prefers to get back on defense than crash the glass with their student-athletes. Getting second chances against the enormous Purdue front line will be another matter altogether. Yale led the Ivy League in defensive efficiency, 3-point defense, and putting their opponents on the foul line. Yet again, this is a significant upgrade in competition this afternoon. The Bulldogs play at a fast tempo which will give Purdue plenty of scoring chances. Yale does not shoot 3s either. They only made 32.9% of their 3-pointers this season (22nd in the country) with them representing less than 30% of the shots they took from the field. Upset-minded teams in the tournament rely on the 3-ball, yet this does not appear to be in the Yalies' arsenal. Yale was fortunate that their Ivy opponents only made 66.1% of their free throws and 27.9% of their 3-pointers, both the lowest marks in the conference. Purdue ranks second in the nation in offensive efficiency. They make 39.1% of their 3-pointers (fourth in the country) and 70.3% of their free throws. The Boilermakers will own the paint and the offensive glass in this game, giving them great first and second looks near the basket. Yale’s tallest starter is 6’7 before Jones can go to the bench with two players standing 6’8. Trevion Williams is a post-up machine for the Boilermakers at 6’10. Then there is the freak of nature that is Zach Edney at 7’4. Purdue is thirteenth in the nation in offensive rebounding rate. The Boilermakers average 79.8 points per game, and they have a good chance of eclipsing 90 points this afternoon. They are led by Jaden Ivey who averages 17.4 points per game. Purdue struggled down the stretch on defense and lost in the Big Ten tournament to Iowa, 75-66, as a 2.5-point favorite. They have not covered the point spread in seven straight games which may be scaring many bettors off. Yet the Boilermakers have covered the point spread in twelve of their last six opening-round games in the NCAA tournament under head coach Matt Painter, and he will be reminding his team not to take Yale lightly after they got upset last year to North Texas. Purdue’s defensive issues are a concern, yet mid-major teams that are small upfront are the teams they simply overwhelm. Take Purdue minus the points. Good luck - Team Del Genio.
