Analysis
At 3:00 PM ET on Wednesday, we will be playing Over the Total in the match between Real Madrid (238053) and Paris Saint-Germain (238054) in the semifinals of the FIFA Club World Cup. THE SITUATION: Real Madrid (W4-D0-L1) reached the semifinals of this tournament with their 3-2 victory against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. Paris Saint-Germain (W4-D0-L1) joined them with a 2-0 victory against Bayern Munich on Saturday. This match is being played on a neutral pitch at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. REASONS TO TAKE OVER THE TOTAL: Gonzalo Garcia has been the breakout star for Los Blancos in this tournament — and he scored goals in the 10th and 20th minute on Saturday to give his team a 2-0 lead. He has scored four goals in this event — and this may be the match where he shares the pitch with Kylian Mbappe in the starting XI with the superstar slowly added into the mix in this event by manager Xabi Alonso since the striker was dealing with both an illness at the onset of this event along with a nagging right ankle injury since the Champions League. He was a substitute in the semifinals but scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time in what turned out to be the game-winning goal. Now in this epic showdown with PSG, I can’t confirm that Mbappe will start — but he will get plenty of time in this high-profile match. A front three of Mbappe, Garcia, and Vinicius Junior could be very explosive — and then there is Jude Bellingham in the midfield feeding those three attackers! Real Madrid has scored three goals in three of their six matches — and they have 11 goals overall in their five matches. But Los Blancos have surrendered goals in three of their five matches in this event. Furthermore, while they have only given up four goals, they have given up 6.89 expected Goals (xG) in those matches. With their recent transfer of center-back Huijsen, out for this match because of yellow card suspensions, their backline is not at full strength. As it is, Real Madrid only has four clean sheets in their last 11 matches across all competitions — and they have surrounded 14 goals during that stretch. Paris Saint-Germain generated 1.98 xG against Bayern Munich despite going down to 10 men late in that match — and Ousmane Dembele scored their second goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time despite them being down two men at that point. Les Rouges were playing loose — and they made two mad mistakes to draw red cards. If that continues in this match, Real Madrid will punish them in a way the Bavarians were unable to do. On the other hand, PSG is so explosive, they were comfortable going on the attack rather than simply burning time off the clock when they earned possession late in that match. Like Mbappe, Dembele has not played much in this event due to injury. But this is prime-time now — so he will get his minutes. Les Parisians have scored 12 goals in this event. Yellow card suspensions will impact their defensive cohesion with defenders Willian Paco and Lucas Hernandez out for this match. PSG’s offensive onslaught can be devastating as they demonstrated in their 5-0 victory against Inter Milan in the Champions League final. They have only conceded one goal in this tournament with four clean sheets — but they do get into shootouts with explosive opponents. In the quarterfinals of the Champions League, they beat an offensive-minded Aston Villa squad by 3-2 and 3-1 scores. In their two matches with Arsenal in the semifinals of the Champions League, only one of the matches saw less than three combined goals. If they take the lead, then Los Blancos will have to get aggressive — and that will create more scoring opportunities for Les Rouges as they demonstrated against Bayern Munich even when down two players on the pitch. FINAL TAKE: These two teams last played on March 9th in 2022, in the second leg of the Round of 16 when Real Madrid rebounded from a 1-0 loss in the first-leg with a 3-1 victory. In the last seven meetings between these teams, there has been three or more combined goals scored in six of those contests — and four of those seven matches saw four or more combined goals. This is a heavyweight contest — but it’s the summer — so I expect a high-scoring affair where the stars on both sides are on display. 25* FIFA Club World Cup Total of the Year with Over the Total in the match between Real Madrid (238053) and Paris Saint-Germain (238054). Best of luck for us — Frank.
