- Analysis
- At 4:10 pm, our selection is on the Seattle Mariners over the Pittsburgh Pirates. There is no better proof in the Majors that if a starter can keep his walks down, then he can be successful overall than the Mariners' Bryan Woo. In his breakout 2024 campaign, the 24-year-old RH walked an average of 1.0 hitters per nine innings -- one of the lowest walk rates in the League. And not surprisingly, Woo finished the season with a 9-3 record, 2.89 ERA, and 0.90 WHIP. He's doing essentially the same thing this season, although the walk rate has risen slightly to 1.5. This year Woo is 7-4 with a 2.93 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in 16 starts covering 101 1/3 innings. He's well on his way to being chosen for his first AL All Star squad and he'll get another chance to prove himself this afternoon against a team which is red-hot, with 6 straight wins. But the Bucco's are 7-14 (minus 7.3 net games) vs. the American League this season, 12-29 (minus 11.6 net games on the road), including 6-19 (minus 7.3 net games) as a road underdog of +150 (or more). The Mariners, meanwhile, are 17-6 (+8.4 net games) in Bryan Woo's 23 home starts in his career, including 13-2 (+10.4 net games) when the Mariners are off a loss. Take Seattle. Good luck, as always...Al McMordie.
