- #953 CUBS with Rea (-) over Phillies with Abel at 6:45 PM EST
In a bad mood off a pair of blemishes to the Phillies and Tigers, the Cubs will respond with a whipping of their own in the City of Brotherly Love on Tuesday night. Chicago's lead in the NL Central rests at 4.0-games over St. Louis and manager Craig Counsell and his troops need this victory in order to maintain their advantage.
Picking up the pill for the visitors will be right-hander Colin Rea. So far this season, No. 53 has appeared in 13 games (nine official starts) and been touched for 23 earned runs and 61 hits in 57.2 innings of work. Colin whiffed 43 and walked 17 on his way to a 4-2 record with a 3.59 ERA. Equally impressive, in seven career performances against the Phillies (five actual starts), Rea holds a 1-2 mark with a reliable 2.45 ERA.
Rookie righty Mick Abel will make his third career start in this matchup. Facing the Pirates and Blue Jays, No. 40 was tapped for one earned run and eight hits in 11.1 innings. Mick whiffed 11 and issued no walks on his way to a 1-0 record with a 0.79 ERA. Also, in AAA-Lehigh Valley this year, Abel made 10 starts and was popped for 14 earned runs and 44 hits in 57.0 frames. After the math, that adds up to a 6-2 mark with a 2.21 ERA.
There are plenty of elite angles that support this investment. Chicago has tasted victory in 40 of its last 66 overall, 19 of its last 25 when coming off a loss, and 32 of its last 54 against non-division foes. On the other side of the field, Philadelphia has slipped in nine of its last 11.
The Cubs have only dropped three straight once all season long and they own the advantage on the bump. Take Chicago with Rea. Thanks, and best of luck, Tom.
