- Analysis
- Two Corbin Carroll solo home runs were all that Arizona produced on offense last night, but it was enough for a 2-1 win over the Giants to open the season series between NL West squads hoping to keep pace with the Dodgers and Padres in the division. That makes four losses in a row for San Francisco but three-straight one-run results as things could easily have flipped for the Giants. San Francisco is 12-6 at home this season and Arizona has gone just 8-11 since April 23. Brandon Pfaadt made a name for himself in Arizona’s 2023 World Series run but his regular season returns have been inconsistent. His 6-2 record this season in eight starts hides a 4.20 FIP with a K/9 below 8.0. Pfaadt has a 6.06 ERA in road starts and despite getting the job done last night, the Arizona bullpen has some of the worst numbers in the National League. San Francisco had more at-bats with runners in scoring position than the Diamondbacks last night and Robbie Ray may be on his way to a revival season. Ray hasn’t been on the mound often the past two seasons but so far in eight starts in 2025 he owns a 2.84 ERA with his usual excellent strikeout rate. Arizona’s recent scoring vs. left-handers has been boosted but on the season the Diamondbacks have a .691 team OPS vs. southpaws for far worse splits compared to vs. right-handers. San Francisco is scoring 5.1 runs per nine this season vs. right-handed pitching and the Giants have great relief pitching numbers to project for an edge in this matchup Tuesday night, even if the Giants have been burned by close losses the past few days.
