Analysis
This series has the makings of a zig-zag series with three competitive games so far. The Knicks won in Detroit in Game 3 in a contentious finish on Thursday as there has been a long layoff ahead of Game 4 without travel. NBA Game 4 hosts in Round 1 as slight favorites off a loss are 8-2-3 ATS since 1991 and the season will feel on the line for the upstart Pistons in danger of losing back-to-back home games to head to New York down 3-1. Tom Thibodeau’s comments on the officiating after Game 2 appear to have paid off as the Knicks received 26 points at the free throw line in the two-point win in Detroit in Game 3, with Jalen Brunson getting 11 points at the line. Detroit has enjoyed a rebounding edge in all three games in this series and if not for a historic collapse in Game 1 as the Knicks scored 40 4th quarter points, the #6 seed could be in complete control of this series. Thibodeau is just 40-48 in his career in playoff games and while that is a significantly better record than J.B. Bickerstaff has in his career, Thibodeau has led several disappointing playoff exits with strong seeds as expectations have rarely been met. The Knicks were a losing ATS team on the road this season and are just 8-9 S/U and 7-10 ATS on the road since late February, while going 5-8 ATS as a road underdog for the season. The Knicks have allowed nearly 37 percent 3-point shooting this season as the worst 3-point defense in the entire NBA playoff field while New York is also a lesser defensive team than Detroit in creating turnovers. New York getting infrequent free throw attempts has been the norm this season, with the eighth fewest attempts in the NBA on the season as the Game 3 scoring at the line for the Knicks was the outlier in this series. Detroit should continue to lead the way in rebounds in this series and the Pistons look capable of evening up this series. NBA playoff hosts off a home loss in a one-possession final are on a 9-2 S/U and 10-1 ATS run in the past 11 instances going back to 2018 as Detroit should have the opportunity to bounce back after a tough finish in Game 3. Thank you for playing with Nelly’s and Best of Luck.
