Analysis
The Pistons didn’t look out of place in Game 1 with Detroit leading much of the third quarter before New York outscored the Pistons 40-21 in the fourth, including posting a 21-0 run midway through the final frame. New York shot over 52 percent overall, but Detroit lost by 11 despite soundly outshooting the Knicks from 3-point range, connecting at nearly 47 percent with five more 3-point shots made. Detroit also had a slight edge at the free throw line on the road for a feat that will be difficult to repeat, with these teams on the opposite end of spectrum in free throws allowed in the regular season with Detroit third worst in the NAB allowing 24.3 attempts per game. The Pistons wound up with 21 turnovers in Game 1 as the Knicks took the series lead despite losing three of four against Detroit in the regular season. Detroit will be a popular underdog in Game 2, but a significant turnover edge is the likely outcome for the Knicks in this series, with New York finishing with the third lowest turnover rate in the NBA this season while Detroit had the eighth worst turnover rate in the NBA, and the second worst of any playoff team. The Knicks are now 5-0 S/U in Games 1 and 2 of playoff series the past two seasons and #3 seeds are 21-7 S/U and 16-12 ATS in Round 1, Game 2 of the playoffs coming off a S/U and ATS win in Game 1, including going 5-1 S/U and ATS in the past six instances since 2019. The Knicks are 20-15-2 ATS as a home favorite this season and the Pistons are just 6-9-1 ATS as a road underdog of 6 or more points this season, going 4-12 S/U in those games. Detroit played well enough to win Game 1 most of the way but didn’t get the job done and it will be difficult to have the same advantages in Game 2. New York has an experienced starting five that can adjust after the higher scoring pace in Game 1, and Detroit is unlikely to match the 3-point and free throw shooting results of Saturday’s game. Game 2 at night Monday at Madison Square Garden will be a tougher environment for the Pistons to steal a road game early in this series as a similar final outcome to Saturday’s game is the most likely scenario. Thank you for playing with Nelly’s and Best of Luck.
