Analysis
Appalachian State has been a top tier Sun Belt team in recent years, but the program has slipped the past two seasons, going just 6-6 in 2022 and 9-5 last season after seven seasons in a row with four or fewer losses. The Mountaineers are 0-2 in the Sun Belt this season and have had to deal with an impossible situation the past two weeks given the devastation on campus and in the surrounding area after Hurricane Helene. The Mountaineers have allowed 100 points in two Sun Belt losses while the team’s quality win at East Carolina in September was a very fortunate result. Turnovers were an issue last week at Marshall but a program accustomed to posting big rushing numbers has averaged 3.7 yards per rush in the past three games while allowing 6.4 yards per rush on the season for one of the worst rush defenses in the nation. Louisiana has averaged 5.9 yards per rush on offense as the 4-1 Ragin’ Cajuns look like a serious Sun Belt Contender. The only loss was a competitive game with Tulane while after the big upset at Wake Forest, Louisiana avoided a letdown on the road last week, getting a win vs. Southern Miss. The modest scoring in the letdown spot is understandable and Louisiana had a 410-177 edge in yardage despite winning by just 10. Ben Woodridge has been an efficient passer with big plays common while the ground attack has two excellent rushers with strong per carry averages. In the loss to Tulane, Louisiana had a 413-355 yardage edge but two turnovers including a pick-6 that was the difference in the outcome as this could easily be a 5-0 team facing a much steeper price, while Appalachian State could easily be a 1-4 team with only an FCS win. Joey Agular is a veteran quarterback that has already thrown for 1,500 yards this season but with just 57 percent completions and a high turnover risk while getting little support with a ground game. The Mountaineers could throw their way back in this game if they fall behind, but Louisiana has scored at least 31 points in eight of its last nine home games and should be highly motivated to get a win against one of the higher profile SBC teams. Thank you for playing with Nelly’s and Best of Luck.
