Analysis
Atlanta is 23-13 vs. left-handed starters this season and in the past 10 games the Braves have scored 6.6 runs per nine vs. left-handed pitching. Atlanta lost 3-2 last night in the opening game of this big series in the NL East but the Braves had a 9-5 edge in hits and three times as many at-bats with runners in scoring position. Philadelphia also needed to use twice as many relievers to close out last night’s game. The Phillies lead the division by seven games but have won just 40 percent of their games since the All-Star break and are just 3-5 while outscored by 20 runs head-to-head with the Braves this season with a split so far this week. Christopher Sanchez has enjoyed a strong season for the Phillies, but he has struggled in recent weeks. Since July 1 his ERA is just 5.55 and three times in eight starts, he has allowed six or more runs. His K/9 is just 5.6 in that span and for the season his road ERA is 5.53. Rookie Spencer Schwellenbach has a 10.1 K/9 and a 1.7 BB/9 in his 75+ innings at the MLB level, even after skipping AAA. His FIP is only 3.39 and he has allowed four or fewer runs in 12 of his 13 starts. Atlanta has far better relief pitching numbers for the season while the Braves have a 0.92 WHIP from the bullpen in the past 10 games in contrast with a 1.53 WHIP for Philadelphia’s bullpen. This division race feels like it should be much closer, and Atlanta is in a favorable set-up and pricing window to bounce back from last night’s loss. Thank you for playing with Nelly’s and Best of Luck.
