- The Mets jumped out to a big early lead last night and never looked back, winning 14-2 in Texas, with a 22-6 edge in hits and a 17-4 edge in at-bats with runners in scoring position. Texas needed 121 pitches from its bullpen last night and over the past 10 games the Rangers have a 5.40 bullpen ERA compared to a 1.46 ERA for the New York bullpen. While both teams are below .500 and postseason long shots at this point, Texas is on an 11-22 run since early May while the Mets are 12-4 in the past 16 games since late May. Luis Severino appears to be on pace to reestablish himself as a quality starter with a 3.12 ERA in 78 innings this season. Michael Lorenzen has a career best 2.86 ERA right now through 66 innings in 2024 but his FIP is 4.71, or the worst since his 2015 rookie season. Lorenzen has had great fortune this season stranding nearly 86 percent of baserunners and holding a .232 BABIP that is well below his career average. Lorenzen has pitched worse in Arlington this season and the Texas offense hasn’t provided much recent support with the Rangers held to three or fewer runs in eight of the past 10 games. New York has scored more runs in the past three games than Texas has scored in the past 10 games and the Mets have received six straight starting efforts of at least five innings to keep the bullpen in good order. These teams have similar records, but the typically disappointing Mets are soundly outplaying the defending World Series champions right now and New York is catching an appealing price with the higher-ceiling starter even after Monday’s blowout win.
