- Analysis
- Luis Castillo is just 1-4 in his first five starts of 2024 while his ERA is 4.40. His FIP is just 2.53 however and he has an 11.3 K/9. Opponents have a .392 BABIP against Castillo in the small early season sample, compared with his career .285 BABIP. Castillo pitched well in a tough venue in Colorado in his last start and has posted back-to-back quality starts with 18 combined strikeouts in 13 innings and he should still be considered an upper tier AL starter. The 2023 World Series champion Rangers are only 12-12 this season with a split in the first two games of this series. The Rangers have hit just .228 with 3.5 runs per nine in the past 10 games vs. right-handers as the lineup has fallen short of expectations. The bullpen has been a problem spot for Texas as well including a 4.59 season ERA, compared with 2.60 for Seattle relievers. Andrew Heaney has never really panned out as a consistent MLB starter despite considerable talent. His career record is 46-50 with a 4.52 ERA and he has been much worse than that in four starts so far this season, trying to back up a solid 2023 season that featured the second most innings of his career. Heaney has allowed nine walks in 17 innings this season and has a 14.73 ERA at home. Seattle is also 4-2 vs. left-handed starters on the season. Texas won 5-1 last night but Seattle had as many hits as the Rangers only to go 1-11 with runners in scoring position. Texas needed more than four innings from three top relievers in a rare scoreless performance from the bullpen that will be difficult to match Thursday afternoon.
