- The Angels won 5-4 in St. Petersburg last night, getting two runs off Tampa Bay closer Pete Fairbanks in the top of the ninth inning. Despite modest scoring in the game there were a combined 23 hits in the game and 16 at-bats with runners in scoring position as Tampa Bay failed in several key spots. There were also a pair of double plays turned by the Angels, plus a pick-off, while the Rays threw a runner out at a home as it easily could have been a higher scoring game. The bullpen has been a sore spot for both teams with the Angels featuring a 4.83 relief ERA this season while the Rays have a 6.23 bullpen ERA, and the recent splits are even worse with a 7.13 ERA in the past 10 games for Tampa Bay. Griffin Canning owns a 9.88 ERA so far this season with five home runs and 21 hits allowed in just over 13 innings of work for disastrous results that may force the Angels to make a rotation change soon. Canning had some good fortune to produce a solid 2023 season but there isn’t much in his career track record that suggests he can be a regular MLB starter at a successful level. Ryan Pepiot wound up with a 2.14 ERA for the Dodgers last season but that was with a .189 BABIP in only 42 innings. Thrown into the rotation as a regular starter for the Rays to start the season, he has produced strikeouts but also owns a 5.40 ERA. Oddly his best start so far this season came in Denver, and he has allowed 10 runs in just over 10 innings at home. These teams have already combined for 32 runs in three games the past three days while the Rays have been a strong ‘over’ team at 12-7 this season. Two unreliable starters and bullpens that are struggling and have had heavy recent workloads should favor another higher scoring opportunity to wrap up this series on Thursday afternoon.
