Analysis
The Pittsburgh Pirates came home from a six-game trip to the West Coast - in Seattle and San Francisco - and didn't miss a beat. They opened their weekend series with division rival St. Louis by putting seven runs across on the Cardinals and taking a 7-5 win last night. Winners of three straight, my money is on the Bucs to get it done tonight. During their three-game win streak, the Pirates are hitting .304 and have scored an average of 6.0 runs per game - including 8.0 the last two games. And the impressive part is they're doing things by manufacturing runs. Be it with extra basehits (11 of 31), or swiping bags (4 SBs), walks (8), or hit batters (4) - the Pirates are getting on base and making things happen. The Cardinals have had a rough year, and though they've split their last 14 games, their pitching staff has a 4.50 ERA since May 18, and have allowed an average of 4.9 runs per contest. In nine of those 14 games St. Louis has allowed five or more runs. And in losing five of their last eight road games, I am more attracted to the plus price with the home dog. My NL Central Dog of the Month is Pittsburgh.
