Analysis
#910 SAN DIEGO RUN-LINE with Darvish (-) over Chicago with Smyly at 10:10 PM EST Checking in hungry after last night's one-run home loss to the Cubs, the Padres will show no mercy in this rematch. Already 8.5-games back in the brutal NL West division, San Diego can't afford home losses especially to a Chicago squad that rests 6.0-games under the .500 mark. Veteran right-hander and former Cubs pitcher Yu Darvish will hit the hump for the home team. In his last outing in the Bronx against the Yankees, No. 11 was pounded for seven earned runs and seven hits in just 2.2 innings of work. Yu fanned two, issued no walks, and was tagged with the loss in the Padres 10-7 blemish. Thankfully, inside Petco Park, Darvish has been at his best surrendering just 11 earned runs and 26 hits in 30.0 frames. After the math, that adds up to a 1-2 tally with a strong 3.30 ERA. Southpaw Drew Smyly will hit the hill for the Cubbies. At home against the Big Red Machine in his last performance, No. 11 was clocked for five earned runs and seven hits in just 4.2 frames. Drew struck out two, walked two, and was nailed with the loss in the Reds 8-5 victory. Overall, with 11 starts in the books this season, Smyly has been slapped for 23 earned runs and 49 hits in 60.0 frames. That shakes down to a 5-2 mark with a 3.45 ERA. This is a tough technical spot for the visitors, too. Chicago has fallen in 23 of its last 33 against NL West foes, 10 of its last 14 facing a foe that scored two runs or less previously, 20 of its last 28 against a right-handed starter, and eight of its last 10 after scoring two run or less last. Since April 20th, the Cubs have won back-to-back games just four times and they'll have trouble against a Padres squad that will be hungry for revenge. Take San Diego on the run-line with Darvish. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
