Analysis
Jose Berrios has well-documented struggles in his road starts but his last three road starts this season for the Blue Jays have been outstanding with a combined three runs allowed in 19 innings against winning teams, while striking out 17. After an uneven start to the season, Berrios has made five excellent starts in a row even through a daunting run of opposing lineups and if you take out his first two starts of the season, Berrios has had a 2.59 ERA since mid-April. The Mets were shut out 3-0 last night and New York has scored only 10 combined runs in the past four games despite being 3-1. Over the past 10 games New York is batting just .217 vs. right-handers and despite these teams having similar records, the Blue Jays are 37 runs stronger in run differential. Tylor Megill has a 4.67 ERA with a 5.28 FIP this season and his strikeout-to-walk ratio is worse than 2:1. Megill has allowed at least two runs in 10 of his 11 starts this season and has allowed at least three runs in six of his last eight starts. Toronto is a top 10 scoring team for its lineup and pitching staff across MLB while the Mets are below average on both sides. The recent bullpen results skew heavily in favor of Toronto as well with a 1.69 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP for the Blue Jays in the past five games compared to a 4.50 ERA for the Mets. Toronto needed only 15 pitches from relievers last night in a 3-0 win and the Blue Jays have the more reliable lineup against right-handers batting .311 with 6.0 runs per nine in the past 10 games. Thank you for playing with Nelly’s and Best of Luck.
