The New York Yankees had a 5-1 lead going into the top of the seventh inning before their bullpen gave up eight runs in a 9-6 loss to the Orioles last night. After a slow start in April, New York was tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers with the best record in Major League Baseball with a 15-6 mark this month. New York has won six straight games after losing their previous game, and they have won five of their last six games after a game where their bullpen gave up a blown save. The Yankees have scored four or more runs in six straight games, and they have scored six or more runs in four of those games. They should continue their recent offensive success against the Orioles’ Kyle Gibson. The right-hander has a 5-3 record with a 4.27 era and a 1.36 whip in ten starts. While he allowed only one run in seven innings at Toronto last Friday, he still has a 4.80 era and a 1.42 whip in his four starts this month. Gibson has only struck out 14 batters in 24 2/3 innings in May. He only strikes out 16.7% of the batters he has faced which is his lowest mark in seven games. His expected ERA based on his peripheral numbers is 4.85. The Yankees have beaten five of their last seven opponents using a right-handed starting pitcher.
Baltimore has won four of their last five games, yet they have only won fourteen times in their last fifty-five games after an upset victory against an opponent from the AL East. They have won once in their last five games after a game where they scored nine or more runs. The Orioles face Clarke Schmidt tonight coming off an outing where he allowed two runs in five innings of work at Cincinnati last Friday. The right-hander pitched five scoreless innings before giving up the two runs in the sixth. Schmidt has not allowed more than two runs in three of his last four starts with a tough assignment against Tampa Bay being his only blemish. His 6.00 era and 1.62 whip for the year do not look very good, yet his underlying numbers are promising. He is striking out 26.1% of the batters he has faced and walked only 7.7% of those batters, both improvements from last year. His era would be better if his strand rate was closer to the league average of 72% rather than its current 62.7% clip. That number should rise as his strand rate was 75.0% last season. The Orioles have won three times in their last nine games when the oddsmakers install them as an underdog priced from +125 to +175. Play the New York Yankees with the money line.
