- I will take the New York Yankees to beat the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night. The starting pitching battle lines up the easiest in New York’s favor.
The Yankees will start Gerrit Cole against Shane Bieber. Cole is currently 6-5 with a 3.35 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. He has struck out 87 batters while walking just 17 over 80 2/3 innings. Bieber has been vastly inferior at 3-2 with a 5.48 ERA and 1.66 WHIP. He has given up 48 hits and 23 walks over just 42 2/3 innings, so the Yankees should have opportunities to put men on base.
That will be key as New York still has a power edge over Toronto. The Yankees have hit 169 home runs to Toronto’s 115. New York has also driven in 545 runs while Toronto has scored 482. Ben Rice leads New York with 32 homers and 76 RBIs, but the team around him can also mash if Bieber leaves his pitches over the plate.
The rotations also tilt towards New York. The Yankees have a 3.30 team ERA and 1.18 WHIP against Toronto’s 3.98 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. If Cole can give New York six solid innings, their bullpen should be able to hold down a lead.
Toronto also limped into this game after Boston shut them out 7-0 on Thursday. New York took two of three from Seattle and then lost an absolutely ridiculous pitchers duel Thursday. The Yankees have gone an impressive 37-26 on the road while Toronto is just 31-32 at Rogers Centre.
The season series has been fairly close, but New York leads Toronto 4-3. This Friday night tilt is one of the better spots for New York to expand their advantage as they get the decidedly more trustworthy Cole on the mound.
I like New York with Cole’s superior strike-zone control over Bieber, who enters with a 5.48 ERA and 1.66 WHIP. New York also has significantly more home-run firepower.
