Analysis
I’ll take the Texas Rangers to beat the Oakland Athletics on Friday night. Texas has the deeper lineup and a nice matchup against left-handed rookie Gage Jump, who has struggled this month. (Note: The A's are officially listed as undecided for their starter) Jump has put Oakland in trouble throughout the year, posting a 5-7 record with a 4.46 ERA and 1.46 WHIP. While those are bad marks, they don’t accurately reflect how poorly he’s pitched over his last seven outings. During that stretch, Jump has a 6.34 ERA and 1.87 WHIP. He has allowed 38 hits and walked 23 batters over just 32 2/3 innings. Considering how hittable Jump has been lately, Texas should have no problem stringing together multi-run innings. Kumar Rocker takes the mound for Texas and comes into Friday at 4-9 with a 4.46 ERA and 103 strikeouts. Rocker wasn’t good against Baltimore in his last start, surrendering six runs over three innings. But he has flashed the ability to be a dominant pitcher in this rotation. Take away his start against the Orioles and Rocker owns a 2.76 ERA in four other starts. He threw six shutout innings (allowing one hit) back in May against the White Sox. Rocker gets a chance to bounce-back against an Athletics team that sits near the bottom of the MLB standings. Oakland is 47-74 coming into the series and was swept by Tampa Bay. The Rays blasted the Athletics for 12 runs Tuesday and eight runs Wednesday. Oakland’s pitching has been hopeless lately. Texas has hit some road bumps on its current road trip, but they’re still in the hunt for the AL West and have more to play for than Oakland. Texas should win this series, but I like them here against Oakland on Friday. Jim's Play: 973. Rangers
