In a bad mood off Thursday's 1-0 shutout home loss to the Mariners, the Bronx Bombers will travel north of the border and pick up a huge division win over the Blue Jays. New York is sitting 6.5-games behind red-hot Tampa Bay for the top spot in the AL East and manager Aaron Boone knows his squad needs to close that gap in a hurry.
Toeing the rubber for the visitors will be ace right-hander Gerrit Cole. Facing the Braves, Cubs, and White Sox in his last three starts, No. 45 has been in excellent form allowing only three earned runs and 14 hits in 18.2 innings of work. Gerrit struck out 21 and walked five on his way to a 3-0 record with an outstanding 1.45 ERA. Equally impressive, in his six-year career in the Big Apple, Cole has made 139 starts and been scratched for only 293 earned runs and 663 hits in 839.2 frames. That's good enough for a 65-33 mark with a powerful 3.14 ERA.
Grabbing the pearl for the hosts will be right-hander Shane Bieber. Battling the Phillies, Astros, and Nationals in his last three starts all on the road, No. 57 was cranked for 10 earned runs and 16 hits in 12.0 innings. Shane whiffed 10 and walked 11 (serious control problems) on his way to a 1-1 mark with a rough 7.50 ERA. On the season, Bieber has made a total of only nine official starts and been slapped for 26 earned runs and 48 hits in 42.2 frames. That equates to a 3-2 tally with a soft 5.48 ERA.
Technically, this is a lucrative wagering spot for the visitors. New York has grabbed victories in 111 of its last 196 when coming off a loss, 135 of its last 234 as a guest, 233 of its last 401 as a favorite, and 109 of its last 187 priced as road chalk. On the other side of the yard, Toronto has fallen in 124 of its last 226 when priced as an underdog.
To make matters worse, the Blue Jays have struggled against MLB teams that carry a team won/loss percentage of .500 or better (31-41) and in their own backyard (31-32). Take New York with Cole. Thanks, and best of luck, Tom.
