Off yesterday's 3-0 shutout home win over the Guardians and with victories in nine of their last 12 games, the Tigers will stay hot and pick up another crucial dub under the Friday night lights. Detroit is currently resting 2.5-games back from the top spot in the AL Central and manager A.J. Hinch will make sure his troops get this important series off on the right foot.
On the bump for the hosts will be young right-hander Jackson Jobe. In his first big league start in more than 14 months because of Tommy John surgery, No. 21 was in a zone allowing no earned runs and one hit in 5.0 innings of work. Jackson fanned four and issued one free pass and picked up the "W" in the Tigers 8-0 victory on the road against the Giants. Overall, in is three-year career with Detroit, Jobe has seen the mound 13 times (11 as a starter) and surrendered 23 earned runs and 48 hits in 58.0 innings of work. That's good enough for a 5-1 mark with a respectable 3.57 ERA.
In a bullpen game for the ChiSox, southpaw Sean Newcomb will get a rare start. With four relief appearances in the bank in August against the Reds Guardians (twice), and Red Sox, No. 15 has allowed no earned runs and two hits in 4.1 innings. Sean whiffed four and walked one on his way to an 0-1 record with a 0.00 ERA. On the season, Newcomb has given up 19 earned runs and 50 hits in 64.1 frames. After the math, that equates to a 1-3 mark with a 2.66 ERA.
There are a number of solid team trends that support this division investment. Detroit has grabbed victories in 127 of its last 240 when coming off a win, 123 of its last 226 when playing in the comforts of home, and 85 of its last 149 when priced as home chalk. On the other side of the field, Chicago has fallen in 186 of its last 280 when coming off a loss and 89 of its last 137 in division play.
