Detroit Tigers vs San Francisco Giants Under 7.5 (-120)

- I’m taking the UNDER in Sunday’s Detroit Tigers-San Francisco Giants matchup and feel the reasons start with the starting pitching matchup between Troy Melton and Logan Webb.
Melton has been dominant for the Tigers this season. He heads into Sunday at 7-1 with a 1.58 ERA and 0.71 WHIP and has been nearly untouchable recently. Melton has allowed three hits or fewer and zero runs over seven innings in each of his past two starts. His most recent start came on Tuesday vs. Seattle and he helped Detroit cruise to an 8-0 win. He’s also yet to lose since June 25th.
That’s going to pose a tough task for a Giants offense that hasn’t hit well in this series anyways. They were blanked 8-0 on Saturday, managing just one hit through the first five innings against Jackson Jobe. Detroit’s bullpen proceeded to shut down 12 of the final 13 Giants hitters. If Melton pitches even remotely close to how he has been recently, the Giants may struggle to muster up three runs.
Completing the Under side of the equation is Logan Webb. Webb heads into Sunday at 7-7 with a 3.74 ERA and is currently on a four-game win streak. He hasn’t lost a start since May 29th. He also looked fantastic in his last start, throwing six innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts against Texas.
Webb has also pitched well against Detroit throughout his career. In three career starts vs. the Tigers, Webb sports a 2.04 ERA with 24 strikeouts over 17 2/3 innings. Webb induces plenty of ground balls and can eat innings, which is exactly what you want to see when siding with an Under.
Even Saturday’s final score of 8-0 is somewhat inflated from a totals perspective. Detroit only led 1-0 until a seven-run outburst in the seventh off San Francisco’s bullpen. Webb should provide a much tougher test for Detroit’s offense if they want to put up crooked numbers in an inning.
Given how Melton (1.58 ERA, two consecutive seven inning shutouts) matches up with Webb (six scoreless innings in his last start) and how poorly San Francisco is hitting in this series, I like UNDER Sunday at Oracle Park.
