- Our 25* World Cup Group J Total of the Year is with the Algeria/Jordan over at 11 pm et.
Expect plenty of goals tonight in a game involving two teams that cannot settle for a draw. Argentina has clinched first place in Group J with their 3-0 victory against Austria this afternoon. Austria has three points from their 3-1 victory against Jordan last week. Jordan is in third place in the group because their -2 net goal differential is better than Algeria’s -3 net goal differential after their 3-0 loss against Argentina last week. If there is a loser tonight, that team is eliminated from qualifying for the knockout stage. For Jordan, a win tonight would make their final group stage against Argentina critical for them. Given that the defending World Cup champions may opt to rest starters, they would be competing with Austria’s final score against Algeria. An Austrian loss in that game would mean Jordan takes second place and advances to the knockout stage. Yet if Jordan loses or ties next week and Austria does the same, then they would need to win this match by two or more goals to surpass Austria’s updated -1 net goal differential. Jordan can score goals. In their sixteen games in the qualifiers for the World Cup, they scored 32 times. In their six games in the Arab Cup last December, they scored 12 goals. Yet Jordan is not likely to slow down the Algerian scoring attack. In their two matches this spring to prepare for the World Cup, they gave up four goals to Switzerland and two goals against Colombia. They have not shut out an opponent in six straight matches, and all six of those opponents scored two or more goals.
Algeria did not start center forward Mohamed Amoura in their match against Argentina, as manager Vladimir Petkovic wanted more defensive-oriented players to start against them. He did come on at the hour mark of that game. With goals and a victory the urgent priority now, expect the 25-year-old who plays for Wolfsburg to be back in the starting lineup tonight. He scored ten goals in the Desert Foxes ten qualifying matches. Algeria needs to win this match by three or more goals to pull ahead of Austria’s -1 net goal differential. That would mean that a draw in that showdown with them next week would be enough to take second place and the second automatic berth in the knockout stage. Algeria scored four goals against Bolivia and seven goals against Guatemala in friendlies earlier this year. They scored 24 goals in their qualifying matches. Yet they had only three clean sheets in those ten qualifying matches. Petkovic uses different tactics based on his team’s opponent. Like against Argentina, the Desert Foxes were defensive in a 1-0 victory against the Netherlands in a friendly earlier this month. Yet when playing lesser opponents than that, Algeria uses an attacking style. Play the over.
Good luck - Team Del Genio.
