- Analysis
- Miami gets the edge in the best case scenario pitching matchup here first and foremost. Tyler Phillips getting the nod for Miami while Tyler Alexander goes for Texas, and that actually gives Miami the safer pitching match up. Phillips has a 3.10 ERA and one Monday betting preview noted that Phillips has a 0.83 ERA at home. Alexander is also still noted as a reliever for Texas, meaning Texas could still use him out of the bullpen or in relief of an opener. Even if he starts the game, this feels more like a short, non-traditional starter game plan from the Rangers than a battle of starting aces.
Miami also enters the game as the much hotter team. After Sunday’s win over San Francisco, the Marlins are currently 14-4 in June, have won five of their last six series, and are on an eight game winning streak at home which is their longest home winning streak since 2009. Texas was in the midst of losing six out of eight before winning their final two games of their recent series against San Diego. This means the recent form trend still favors Miami heading into this game as well.
Phillips has even posted success in a similar situation recently. On June 11 against Arizona, Phillips allowed five innings of scoreless ball with just two hits allowed and Miami’s bullpen was able to close that game out. Phillips doesn’t need to go deep into this game for Miami to win. They just need him to pace their rookie pitcher through the first five or six innings with the Marlins still in the game, and then let their current form kick in from there. With the pitching matchup, better team form, and home field advantage, the Marlins find themselves with a nice path to victory in this game.
