Analysis
We’ll start with starting pitching. Washington will roll with Foster Griffin while MLB’s probable-pitchers page continues to list Philadelphia as TBD for Monday and another source notes the Phillies are preparing to fill the rotation spot after Andrew Painter’s demotion and names Alan Rangel as one potential option. No matter who the Phils start I'm looking at Griffin for my main reason to back the Nats. Griffin will come in 7-2 with a 3.32 ERA and a 1.59 ERA over his last three starts, including at least five innings in each. He also has experience against the Phillies this season, beating Philadelphia 4-2 on March 30 after allowing two runs across five innings. Washington brings a legitimate offensive case to the matchup as well. The Nationals top the Phillies in runs scored, batting average, OBP, SLG, hits, and homers. That includes 416 runs scored which leads MLB. CJ Abrams has homered in three games straight and owns a .286 average with 17 homers on the year. Nasim Nunez adds a seven-game hitting streak and is 12-for-21 over those games. Washington has enough going on in their lineup to at least put pressure on a Phillies pitching staff that heads to the mound without a confirmed starter. Plus, there’s the situation surrounding both clubs. Philadelphia took care of business on Sunday night versus the Mets and heads into a seven-game road trip. Washington gets to open that series at home and currently sits just outside the playoff picture, though still very much alive. The Nationals did lose a close game to Tampa Bay on Sunday, Washington was leading 3-1 into the sixth and continues to play meaningful baseball. Combine all of that and Washington has the more reliable starting option, the higher-powered offense when looking at the full season, and a chance to take an early lead. Jim's Play: 902. Nationals
