Analysis
Milwaukee opened as a mid-size favorite, so Cincinnati is live at home dog prices for me heading into Monday action. You are getting a live home dog in what should be a volatile game due to the high run total. That matters because this isn’t necessarily a matchup where Milwaukee looks physically dominant. Brandon Woodruff is the probable starter for Milwaukee while Cincinnati will counter with Brady Singer. There’s at least some uncertainty as far as who’s taking the ball for Milwaukee heading into first pitch but that's no real concern for me as I'm backing this play on the Reds and Singer. Cincinnati has also played better recent baseball than their record may indicate. The Reds just beat the Yankees 4-1 on Sunday behind Chase Burns, which was the cap on a successful series against both New York teams. Cincinnati went 4-2 on their week leading into this matchup. Spot like that are great for contrarian bets because the market can still price the Reds as a second-division team despite playing sharper baseball as of late. Speaking of sharper than their record shows, Milwaukee is pretty banged up. They are 46-29 and currently in first place in the NL Central, but Brew Crew Ball mentioned they have multiple pitchers on the IL. Woodruff was only expected back for Monday’s game as of Sunday. If his return is pitch-counted or he’s not completely sharp, Cincinnati can attack Milwaukee’s bullpen deeper into the game. Bullpen games play a huge factor in hitter friendly ballparks like Great American Ball Park, especially with a total like 9.5. That park factor comment is simply based on the total and knowledge of the venue, but it’s another reason to like the Reds at underdog prices. Pitching matchups suggest Cincinnati’s best bet is to notch a quality, not great start from Singer, limit Milwaukee’s chances to do damage via home runs and let their home park play to their advantage late. Cincinnati is 16-7 when they do not allow a home run, so there’s your formula. Give Milwaukee credit where it’s due, but I feel like this line is closer to a coin-flip type of game than people are giving Cincinnati at plus money. Jim's Play: 904. Reds (Dog of the Day)
