Analysis
At 9:40 PM ET on Monday, we will be playing the money-line on the Arizona Diamondbacks (966) versus the Los Angeles Angels (965), listing both starting pitchers, Ryne Nelson and Walbert Urena. THE SITUATION: Arizona (36-35) has won two of their last three games their 5-3 win at Cincinnati on Sunday. Los Angeles (29-43) had won four games in a row before their 8-3 loss at Tampa Bay yesterday. REASONS TO TAKE THE DIAMONDBACKS WITH THE MONEY-LINE: Arizona returns home to Chase Field after finishing a six-game road trip — and they have won 5 straight games at home in a row after playing three or more games in a row on the road. They have also won 11 of their last 16 games at home — and they have won 14 of their 23 home games this season when priced as a money-line favorite priced up to -150. Ryne Nelson gets the ball, looking to improve on his 2-5 record along with a 5.19 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP in 14 starts. His numbers are warped by a disastrous start at home on April 19th when he gave up eight earned runs in just 1/3 of an inning against Toronto. In his last four starts at home, he enjoys a 2.20 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP. In his 86 1/3 innings at home last season, the right-hander sported a 2.71 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP — so it’s reasonable he continues his recent success at home. He should fare well against this Angels team that ranks 23rd and 22nd since May 1st in weighted On-Base Average and weighted Runs Created against right-handed pitchers. Los Angeles has lost 16 of their last 21 games on the road — and they have lost 12 of their last 16 road games as a money-line underdog priced up to +150. They have also lost 16 of their last 24 games against teams from the National League. They turn to Walbert Urena, who has a 4-4 record with a 2.44 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP in 12 appearances (10 starts). The right-hander has been more effective at home, where he has a 1.85 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP in seven starts — but in his five games on the road, those numbers rise to a 3.86 ERA and a 1.90 WHIP. The deeper sabermetrics call for regression with both his SIERA and xFIP projecting an ERA of 4.65 and 4.93 moving forward. Arizona’s bats have been feast or famine recently as they have scored five or more runs in four of their last seven games, but have failed to score more than one run in those other three contests. The Diamondbacks love hosting teams from the American League — they lead MLB at home in weighted On-Base Average and weighted Runs Created this season in interleague play. FINAL TAKE: The Diamondbacks have won 15 straight games against teams that are winning 38-46% of their games. 10* MLB Monday Late Show Bailout with the money-line on the Arizona Diamondbacks (966) versus the Los Angeles Angels (965), listing both starting pitchers Ryne Nelson and Walbert Urena. Best of luck for us — Frank.
