- The biggest reason to think Pirates vs. Oakland will go over the total Monday is this number is rather high at 10.5. However, we still like the chances of plenty of offense being scored because both teams can put up runs and neither pitching matchup strikes us as being full shutdown caliber. Pittsburgh has averaged nearly 5.0 runs per game by tallying 359 runs in 72 outings, while Oakland has hit 92 homers and owns a higher slugging percentage than the Pirates (.417 to .402). The Pirates are starting Jared Jones, who has only started three games all season and has thrown a total of just 13 1/3 innings on the year, and the Pirates are still controlling his usage rather than letting him go deep into games. Why does that matter? Well, it significantly increases the chances this becomes a bullpen-heavy game from the get-go.
Oakland’s staff got lit up Sunday, so the over seems even more likely when you consider how the A’s bullpen is trending into this game. Oakland got pounded 23-9 by Colorado, so pitchers and catchers were hardly eased into Monday’s action. Oakland’s bullpen was simply destroyed in Denver, so expect another throwing-around-the-ballpark day in Sacramento. Reuters added Oakland suffered through some “wild outings” during its recent stint in Las Vegas, and while that may just be noise considering Oakland returned to Sacramento on Sunday, the bigger picture is Oakland’s pitching staff has been rather erratic all season. Oakland has the slight edge on paper with starter J.T. Ginn, but he allowed five runs on eight hits during his most recent start and Oakland’s team ERA and WHIP (4.85 and 1.44) are just shaky enough to keep this game within Pittsburgh’s reach.
Both of these offenses have also been pretty good as of late. Oakland had 15 hits and scored nine runs even in Sunday’s blowup and has now won four of six, while Pittsburgh has the lineup to hurt you if Ginn is remotely off his game (17 homers and 46 RBIs from Lowe). If Jones is limited early, Oakland’s bullpen is coming off a wild day and both teams have enough power to change the game in one swing, we do not see pitcher matchup here. This game looks to eclipse that posted total quite easily here on Monday evening.
