Analysis
Detroit should have the advantage going into Tuesday based on the starting pitching matchup alone. MLB’s probable-pitcher pages have Framber Valdez lined up for Detroit against Jovani Moran for Boston in Game 2 of the series at Comerica Park. Valdez sports a 2-1 record with a 3.35 ERA while Moran is 0-0 with a much lower 2.33 ERA but has pitched only 19.1 innings on the season and is nowhere near as proven in a starter’s role as Valdez. Detroit also has a potential bounce-back scenario to exploit after falling 5-4 on Monday. Detroit kept Boston hitless into the sixth inning and took a 2-0 lead before Dillon Dingler’s two-run double in the eighth inning left Detroit with the tying run on base late. The ultimate score isn’t quite reflective of how close Detroit stayed in the game, though. Detroit pitching held its own enough on Monday that a short-term response isn’t out of the question. I’m also still buying into Detroit despite Monday’s loss because it gets to lean on pitching that resembles a traditional starter’s role on Tuesday after being forced to cobble together a bullpen game on Monday. Detroit was forced to use Tyler Holton as an opener on Monday due to Tarik Skubal being scratched from the matchup and later diagnosed for elbow surgery. With Skubal sidelined indefinitely, Valdez’ starts are simply more valuable and Detroit should find itself more settled in for the majority of Tuesday’s game than it was on Monday thanks to Valdez being stretched out as a starter. Boston deserves some credit for coming back to win on Monday, but the Tigers still feel like the better team on the whole. Boston sits at 14-21 while Detroit is 18-18 and hosts this game with the stronger matchup predictor and the better-established starter. Framber Valdez keeps Detroit in the game long enough and Detroit has any sort of offensive production at all and the Tigers have every chance at taking a 1-1 split on Tuesday night. Jim's Play: 912. Tigers
