Analysis
Cade Cavalli has been a big part of Washington’s competitive 16-19 start to the season. The 2020 first round pick is 27 years old, but he appears ready for a breakthrough season with a 3.82 ERA and a 2.85 FIP in seven starts. He has an 11.2 K/9 with a low home run rate as he has been a solid groundball producer in his short career along with the strikeout potential. Cavalli has a 2.63 ERA at home and even though the Nationals are just 4-12 in home games, Washington should be in a good position to start this interleague series with success. Washington has already faced the Dodgers, Braves, and Brewers for 10 home games as the home path has been difficult and winning on Sunday at home before an off day yesterday should be beneficial to the Nationals this week. The Twins are just 4-13 since April 15 even with a win on Sunday as well. Taj Bradley is having a good season but his ERA and FIP numbers are exactly the opposite of Cavalli’s numbers, featuring a 3.82 FIP but a 2.85 ERA as Bradley has slightly overachieved while Cavalli has slightly underachieved in the first weeks of the season. Bradley has been outstanding at Target Field and more average in his road starts and he has been fortunate with an 87 percent strand rate so far this season. Bradley has been at risk to allow home runs with five surrendered in his past two starts and Washington has a lineup with some power as these teams have remarkably similar offensive totals for the season with a slight edge in scoring for the Nationals. Washington has also featured the slightly better bullpen numbers at this point in the season with a more pronounced edge in the past 10 games. Minnesota has a 1.51 WHIP with a 6.44 ERA from relievers in the past 10 games and even with an off day Monday, the pitching staff has been pressed with Joe Ryan leaving in the first inning of Sunday’s game while Cole Sands and Garrett Acton have both hit the IL from the bullpen in the past week. Washington’s weak home record has come through a tough path while Minnesota is just 5-10 in road games including a 1-5 run in its last road trip. Thank you for playing with Nelly’s and Best of Luck.
