- Analysis
- The top reason to fade the over in Monday’s total between the Angels and Yankees is the matchup under the surface of starting pitchers. Angels’ starter Yusei Kikuchi enters with an 0-2 record and 6.75 ERA to go along with a 1.77 WHIP. Kikuchi allowed nine runs on 12 hits in his last 10 1/3 innings dating back to his last two starts. As dismal as those numbers are, it’s even tougher to feel good about Kikuchi’s profile while in Yankee Stadium against an offense that still has enough big swingers to do some damage even while slumping should he keep allowing men on base.
However, we can make a credible argument that the Angels can scratch across enough runs themselves to get this over the total. Through 16 games the Angels have already scored 73 runs compared to New York’s 65 and have 19 home runs to the Yankees’ 14. The Angels tallied 19 runs in their two victories over the weekend in Cincinnati and have already had seven games with at least five runs scored this season, so this lineup is not coming into this spot cold.
Even though Will Warren has fared better than Kikuchi so far this season, he is not lights-out enough to scream under either. Warren comes into this matchup with a 3.07 ERA and 1.30 WHIP, both of which are decent numbers, but not great enough to completely suppress an Angels team that has seen production from a variety of bats lately.
It’s fairly simple really: the Angels hit enough to pose some threat against New York’s pitching, the Yankees get a very left-handed pitcher they can attack in Kikuchi, and the total sits low enough where a couple of innings with multiple runs scored can clear the bar. Even with the Yankees in a five-game slump, this feels more like a game with two offenses that could contribute rather than a low-scoring pitchers’ matchup.
