- Analysis
- The Twins went just 13-23 vs. left-handed starters last season and Minnesota’s lineup has lived up to low expectations in a 1-3 start to the season. Against left-handers so far this season the Twins are batting just .130 while scoring 1.1 runs per nine on average, albeit through an extremely small sample size. Noah Cameron has a solid rookie season for the Royals last season with a 2.99 ERA in 24 starts and he allowed just one run in nearly 13 innings against Minnesota last season. Both of those starting efforts were on the road and last season Cameron had even stronger splits at home. Joe Ryan is Minnesota’s top starter, and he had an All-Star season last year. He pitched well in the season opener despite Minnesota losing a close game but his only start in Kansas City last season was a disaster allowing five runs in two innings. Ryan does have good career splits vs. the Royals but Kansas City is a much different team right now than when Ryan went 4-0 vs. the last place Royals in 2022 to boost his career numbers in the matchup. The Royals have only scored nine runs in a 2-2 start to the season, but seven runs have come in the past two games, and this is a lineup with a great deal of promise. The shutout loss for the Royals in the opener came against Chris Sale, one of MLB’s best left-handers while the Royals are 2-1 with better offensive production results in the three games vs. right-handers this season. Minnesota was 32-49 in road games last season and the roster for Minnesota resembles the group that went 23-43 after the All-Star Break following a reasonably competitive near .500 run to start the season. Both bullpens have struggled in the first few games of the season but all preseason projections suggest the Royals should have a decent bullpen this season in contrast to the Twins, who traded or lost many of last season’s top options and lack much experienced depth behind Cole Sands and Taylor Rogers, neither of whom matched their prior success last season.
