Analysis
At 12:00 PM ET on Sunday, we will be playing the Pennsylvania Quakers (641) plus the points versus the Yale Bulldogs (642) in the championship game of the Ivy League tournament. THE SITUATION: Penn (16-11) has won four games in a row — and eight of their last nine contests — after their 62-60 upset victory in overtime against Harvard as a 3.5-point underdog in the semifinals of this tournament on Saturday. Yale (23-5) has won three games in a row — and eight of their last nine — after an 88-76 win against Cornell as a 3.5-point favorite in their semifinals contest yesterday. This game is being played on a neutral court at Newman Arena in Ithaca, New York. REASONS TO TAKE THE QUAKERS PLUS THE POINTS: Penn stunned Harvard yesterday despite only making 38.5% of their shots from the field, which was the worst shooting effort in their last ten contests — and their 35% clip from behind the arc was their worst performance from distance in their last five contests. The Quakers have covered the point spread in 5 of their last 6 games after an upset victory. They have also covered the point spread in 8 of their last 9 games on the road after a straight-up win. Additionally, while Penn has played a whopping 13 straight games Under the Total, they have then covered the point spread in 8 of their last 12 games after playing three or more Unders in a row. In their last ten games, they have knocked off -3.0 points off their Adjusted Defensive Efficiency for the season. The Quakers rank 28th in the nation in putting their opponents on the free throw line. On the road, they are scoring +7.0 more points per 100 adjusted possessions per game. Penn is an outstanding 3-point shooting team. They rank 16th in the nation by nailing 38.1% of their shots from behind the arc. They are a rare team that is not feasting from 3-point range because of the familiarity of their home gym. On the road, the Quakers are making 41.3% of their 3s, which is the third-best mark in the nation. Overall, Penn enjoys the 23rd-best improvement in Adjusted Net Efficiency when playing on the road. They also do a great job in defending the perimeter as they rank 50th in the nation by holding their opponents to a 31.5% shooting clip from behind the arc — and Yale is the best 3-point shooting team in Ivy League play. Furthermore, head coach Jon Jacques team does not make it easy on their opponents, who are averaging 18.1 seconds per possession, which is the 61st longest rate in the nation. That is an underrated defensive metric — and it is particularly tasty for an underdog getting up to 10 points in this game. The Quakers have covered the point spread in 10 of their last 14 games on the road. They have covered the point spread in 12 of their last 18 games as an underdog. And in their last 10 games with the Total set in the 140s, they have covered the point spread in 7 of those games. Yale nailed 40% of their shots from behind the arc yesterday, which was the best long-distance shooting mark in their last five games. But the Bulldogs have failed to cover the point spread in 7 of their last 11 games after straight-up win against a fellow Ivy League rival. On the road, Yale is scoring -3.4 fewer points per 100 adjusted possessions, which is the 25th worst decline in scoring when away from home. The biggest problem is their -5.1% decline in free throw percentage when playing away from home, the 54th worst in the nation. The Bulldogs have failed to cover the point spread in 5 of their last 8 road games with the Total set in the 140s. And while Penn allows their opponents to make 47.7% of their shots, Yale has failed to cover the point spread in 4 of their last 5 games against teams that allow their opponents to make 45% or more of their shots. Yale plays at a slow pace. They average 18.6 seconds per possession, which is the 70th slowest pace in the nation — and the 64.5 adjusted possessions per game is the 325th fewest of the 365 teams in Division I. Getting up to ten points in a slower-paced game offers us more value. FINAL TAKE: The Bulldogs did sweep the two games between these two teams in the regular season after a narrow 74-70 win at home as a 9-point favorite on February 21st — but the Quakers have covered the point spread in 6 of their last 7 games on the road when playing with revenge. 25* CBB Ivy League Game of the Year with the Pennsylvania Quakers (641) plus the points versus the Yale Bulldogs (642). Best of luck for us — Frank.
