- Analysis
- At 8:30 PM ET on Tuesday, we will be playing the West Virginia Mountaineers (640) minus the points versus the Kansas State Wildcats (639). THE SITUATION: West Virginia (13-7) had won two games in a row before their 88-53 loss at Arizona on Saturday. Kansas State (10-10) has lost six of their last seven games after their 86-62 loss at home to Kansas as a 4.5-point underdog on Saturday.
REASONS TO TAKE THE MOUNTAINEERS MINUS THE POINTS: West Virginia only made 34.4% of their shots on Saturday in their worst shooting effort of the season. They also allowed the Wildcats to make 52.5% of their shots, which their worst defensive effort in their last six contests. Now, after playing their last two games on the road, they return home, where they are 12-0 this season, including a signature victory against Kansas. They rank third in the nation at home by holding their opponents to just a 40.6% shooting percentage inside the arc. They rank 19th in the nation with an Adjusted Defensive Efficiency of 93.5 — and they are giving up -10.6 fewer points at home per 100 adjusted possessions. The Mountaineers have covered the point spread in 8 of their last 12 games at home. And while the Wildcats make 46.7% of their shots, West Virginia has covered the point spread in 5 straight home games against teams that make 45% or more of their shots. Kansas State has failed to cover the point spread in 4 of their last 5 games after a straight-up loss to a fellow Big 12 rival. They have also failed to cover the point spread in 9 of their last 13 games after a loss by 15 or more points. Additionally, they have failed to cover the point spread in 6 straight games after allowing 85 or more points. They go back on the road, where they rank 300th in the nation by allowing their opponents to pull down 35.5% of their missed shots. The Wildcats also allow their opponents to make 58.9% of their shots inside the arc when playing on the road, ranking 331st in the nation. That is not a good combination.
FINAL TAKE: The Mountaineers began the season ranked third in the nation in Division I experience. They are making 45.1% of their shots and holding their opponents to 41.3% shooting. Kansas State has failed to cover the point spread in 11 of their last 15 games against teams that shoot 45% or better from the field.
