- Analysis
- Wake has the matchup advantage right now due to having the cleaner offensive profile. Team splits show Wake Forest playing as a top-50-ish offense and an above-average team overall on both ends. Pitt hasn’t shown an ability to separate from anyone consistently this season. Plus, Wake Forest has a reliable shot creator in Juke Harris (team-high 20.6 ppg) when the game grinds down late in the shot clock in the last eight minutes. That matters when every possession counts in a close road game and you need someone who can manufacture a good shot without necessarily having a perfect set.
Availability favors Wake Forest, too. Injury trackers show zero reported injuries for Wake. Pitt will be without frontcourt depth including Papa Amadou Kante who is out for the season. That can manifest itself on the glass and in protecting the rim over 40 minutes if Wake Forest attacks the paint and forces Pitt’s bigs to defend in space.
Wake Forest simply being average on both ends can allow them to cover the spread. Pitt’s free-throw woes could lead to them falling behind the stick, and Wake Forest not having anyone who can beat them by themselves should prevent the Panthers from establishing any consistent leads.
Dream up a close game where Wake Forest’s steadier offense and ability to create late shots prevents them from going cold for extended stretches. Pitt makes Wake Forest pay at the free-throw line and scores just enough to lose with Wake getting the cover.
