- Analysis
- UMass can cover tonight at Miami (OH) because the number is big for a game that should be played at a fast pace. The market has Miami (OH) -9.5 with a 164.5 total, which basically expects a track meet where the underdog is still supposed to lose by double digits. In games that get into the 160s, a +9.5 ticket has a lot of ways to cash if you can keep scoring and avoid the 6-minute dead stretch.
The first reason UMass is live is that they have real scoring options and can keep pressure on the scoreboard. They’re averaging 79.7 points per game on the season, and they’ve got multiple double-figure guys, led by Leonardo Bettiol (17.1 ppg) and Marcus Banks Jr. (16.2 ppg), with Daniel Hankins-Sanford (11.7 ppg) right behind them. That balance matters on the road, because you’re less likely to get completely taken out of the game if one player has an off shooting night.
The second angle is Miami’s personnel. Miami’s dream season has been real, but they’re doing it without starting point guard Evan Ipsaro, who’s been out with a knee injury, forcing others into bigger creation roles. Ipsaro was a major piece of their attack (13.9 ppg in the games he played), and while Miami has adapted, it can show up late in close games when you need clean possessions and ball security.
The third reason is the “price tax” on Miami right now. They’re 20-0, and that tends to inflate spreads, especially at home. Even Miami-friendly coverage notes their schedule strength has been weak (KenPom strength of schedule cited around 332nd), so there’s a reasonable argument that the margin the market is demanding tonight is bigger than what they’ve been regularly asked to cover.
Miami likely scores because they play fast and put pressure on the paint, but UMass answers with enough shot-making to hang around, and the absence of a true starting PG stabilizer for Miami helps keep it from becoming a runaway.
