Analysis
Nevada is 14-6 for the season but there have been two home losses in Reno this season including a Mountain West loss. The MWC wins haven’t come against top tier teams, and the Wolf Pack have struggled to score inside this season with a very small roster by MWC standards. In the 6-3 start in conference play, Steve Alford’s team has lost its three toughest games. Grand Canyon is a newcomer to the MWC, but the Antelopes have quickly become a quality program and so far has competed well with a 6-2 start in league play. That includes wins over both Utah State and San Diego State while Grand Canyon has three road wins in conference play. The defense for Bryce Drew’s squad has been exceptional, allowing barely 30 percent from 3-point range while ranking third in the MWC in defensive efficiency even while facing one of the most difficult paths in the first half of the league schedule. Nevada has its rivalry game with UNLV up later this week on the schedule and the deliberate pace of play for Nevada makes the Wolfpack a suspect favorite as five of 14 wins have been in two possession finals. Grand Canyon is 5-1 S/U and ATS in the past six games and the Antelopes survived Saturday’s flat spot at Fresno State following the dramatic one-point win over San Diego State for a clear sign of a mature team that can handle success. Grand Canyon is one of the most experienced teams in the MWC and the roster should have a clear size edge in this pairing with several clear matchup edges. Brian Moore missed the last game for Grand Canyon, but he isn’t a critical producer on the roster. Nevada’s loss of Joel Armotrading earlier this season will be impactful in this pairing as he was the tallest player on the roster and Grand Canyon has a towering front court that has led the Antelopes to shoot six percent better than Nevada inside the arc this season, with much stronger defensive results as well. Nevada is the top 3-point shooting team in MWC play but Grand Canyon is the top 3-point defense allowing below 26 percent beyond the arc with a nearly seven percent edge in effective field goal rate allowed in conference play. Grand Canyon may not have a history of success in the MWC like Nevada and Alford have, but there is no denying that the Antelopes look like a serious MWC contender. Thank you for playing with Nelly’s and Best of Luck.
