Analysis
#603/604 ASA PLAY ON Under 137 Points – Michigan State vs Rutgers, Tuesday at 6:30 PM ET - MSU is one of the elite defensive teams in the country and we expect Rutgers to struggle big time on offense. In fact, Sparty ranks #1 in the country in defensive efficiency while allowing opponents to shoot just 38% overall and 29% from beyond the arc. They’ve allowed only 1 team to top 66 points in Big 10 play and they’ve held 6 of their 9 opponents to 60 points or less. Rutgers ranks dead last (18th) on eFG% in Big 10 play and they’ve played 4 games in conference season vs teams in the top 8 in the league in defensive efficiency. In those games the Scarlet Knights have scored 55, 60, 62 and 65 points. We’ll be surprised if the get to 60 in this game. MSU’s offense ranks 7th in the league in efficiency and their road stats haven’t been great on that end of the court. They are averaging 70 PPG in their Big 10 road games compared to 80 PPG at home. Rutgers defensive numbers won’t blow you away by any means, however at home they’ve allowed opponents to shoot just 41% while giving up an average of 70 PPG. Neither team shoots many 3’s ranking 13th and 14th in the Big 10 in percentage of points scored from beyond the arc. Both defenses to a good job of keeping opponents off the FT line both ranking in the top 50 nationally in opponents FT attempts per game. Last but not least, both are slow paced teams so possessions should be limited. MSU is a big favorite here (-14.5 as of this writing) and we see them getting a lead and grinding this one out and moving on to their HUGE game on deck with arch rival Michigan. Let’s take the Under.
