Analysis
Our 25* NHL Pacific Division Game of the Month is on Los Angeles with the money line versus Calgary at 10:07 pm et. The Los Angeles Kings come back home wanting to rebound from yet another overtime loss in a tough luck start to the season. This time, the loss was in Seattle against the Kraken by a 3-2 score on Wednesday. The Kings have lost eight games in overtime this year. Eleven of their sixteen losses have been decided by only one goal. Los Angeles is in all these close games because they are playing great defense. They are only giving up 2.7 goals per game, and they have the third-fewest goals scored against them this season. They only allow their opponents to register 26.5 shots per game. Their problem is that they are not scoring enough goals to pull away from their opponents (or win more close games). Los Angeles has scored twelve combined goals in their last three games, and they average 3.5 goals per game against division opponents. At least defenseman Drew Doughty is back this month after missing a few weeks to injury in November. The Kings have won seventeen of their previous twenty-six games at home after losing their previous game. They have won fifteen of their previous twenty-three games when playing with two days of rest, and they have won seventeen of their previous twenty-two games at home when playing for the second time in five days. Darcy Kuemper is their goaltender tonight. He has been outstanding this season as he makes his case to be the starting goaltender for Team Canada in the Winter Olympics early next year. He has a 2.23 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage in 21 starts. Last year, he posted a 2.02 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage. In his four starts this month, he has a 1.53 goals-against average and a .942 save percentage. He has been very stingy in his nine starts at home this season, where he has posted a 1.53 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage with two shutouts. The Kings have won twenty-six of their previous thirty-nine games at home when the oddsmakers installed the over/under at 5.5. Calgary had won three games in a row before a 4-3 loss at home against Detroit on Wednesday. That game completed the Flames' four-game home stand. They have won just three of their previous thirteen games after playing on the road in their previous game, and they have won once in their previous six games on the road following a game at home. Calgary has won six times in their previous nineteen games following a loss. They are only averaging 2.6 goals per game this year. On the road, they are averaging 2.3 goals per game yet giving up 3.5 goals per game. They have won twice in their previous nine games on the road when the oddsmakers installed the over/under at 5.5. They have pulled off only five upsets in their previous fifteen games on the road when the oddsmakers installed them as a money line underdog. Dustin Wolf is their goaltender tonight. He has a 9-12-2 record in his twenty-three starts this year with a 2.95 goals-against average and a .897 save percentage. Yet he has a 3-8-0 record on the road, and in his twelve appearances on the road, he has a 4.05 goals-against average and an .863 save percentage. Last year, Wolf had a 2.33 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage in thirty-two starts at home. Yet on the road last year, he had a 3.13 goals-against average and a .891 save percentage. This is the first meeting between these teams this year, yet it is not a good matchup for the Flames. Calgary has only beaten three of their ten opponents this year who hold their opponents to 26.5 or fewer shots per game. Play Los Angeles with the money line. Good luck - Team Del Genio.
