Analysis: There was a time when this matchup would attract totals in the 60s and near 70. But times have changed and we're thinking defense when talking about Boise State and Washington. Boise State has been engaged in high-scoring games this season, it's true. But it also stayed under in five of its last six games down the stretch, including the Mountain West championship, where it limited high-flying UNLV to 21 points. The Broncos rank 36th overall with a defense that holds teams to 335.5 yards per game, and has been excruciatingly stingy against the pass in holding teams to 171.5 yards passing (13th nationally). That will pose a problem for the Huskies, who count on their passing game to ignite things when pressed defensively. The last two times they went off offensively was against Purdue and UCLA, one team with a first-year coach and the other that fired its coach mid-season. Bookending those games were stumped efforts against Wisconsin (10-13) and Oregon (14-26). The history is there, where the Huskies trounce bad teams and struggle to get going against defensively sound teams. Instead, Washington will match defensive wits with the nation's 20th-ranked D (311.4 ypg. allowed) and 21st-ranked scoring D (19.4 ppg. allowed). This will be much more physical than anticipated and will stay low.
