Analysis
UNLV is just 4-5 this season and that includes home losses to Tennessee Martin and Montana, teams outside the nation’s top 200 that rate similarly to Tennessee State. The Rebels picked up a high profile win at Stanford last weekend and the up-tempo squad is in a major transition under Josh Pastner, with this group playing much more similarly in style to his Memphis teams than the Georgia Tech teams he more recently led. UNLV is a 28 percent 3-point shooting team and a 68 percent free throw shooting team while the defense has struggled inside. This is the first season for the Tigers under Nolan Smith and Tennessee State will be happy to match the pace of UNLV. Smith starred at Duke and played in the NBA before earning his coaching credentials as an assistant at several major programs. The 5-4 record for the Tigers includes two top 250 wins but the team’s worst loss came in the last game at Alabama A&M. That was on December 3, and the long break could help the squad regroup with this tough non-conference test in Henderson before the OVC season commences. Tennessee State played two MWC teams tough during last season and this group was 12-8 in league play last season and brings back several key players. Tennessee State has faced a top 50 schedule this season but only had two lopsided losses, one of which came in Knoxville to highly ranked Tennessee. The shooting numbers have been poor for the Tigers, but the defense has been capable, and UNLV doesn’t have the size to present mismatches that the OVC squad could face against other larger conference teams. Good rebounding and defensive turnover numbers could keep the Tigers in this game in what looks like a dangerous lull in the schedule for UNLV with the conference opener on deck. Howie Fleming didn’t play in the win over Stanford last week and the depth for the Rebels is thin right now due to injuries heading into a game that should feature an up-and-down pace. Thank you for playing with Nelly’s and Best of Luck.
