- West Virginia is 8-3 this season with no top 100 wins but the three top 100 losses have all been competitive games away from home. The Mountaineers are playing at an extraordinarily deliberate tempo in the first season under Ross Hodge, who won 27 games last season at North Texas. The Mountaineers have a top 50 defense and have been very difficult to score against inside, while creating turnovers at an extremely high rate. Ohio State just split two Big Ten games last week including losing a high-profile conference home opener with Illinois on Tuesday. The Buckeyes are 7-2 but with no top 50 wins and extremely close calls in two top 100 wins winning by one and four points. These teams went to overtime in 2023, and West Virginia is on a 4-0 ATS run with three S/U wins in this series since 2008. Ohio State is playing North Carolina next on the schedule and while this game in Cleveland will get strong fan support for the Buckeyes, Ohio State lost six home games last season in the first year under Jake Diebler and this year’s team has a nearly identical statistical pace to last season’s team. West Virginia had wins over Gonzaga, Arizona, Kansas, and Iowa State last season as this group had the potential to play well in tough games and the current roster is one of the most veteran experienced groups in the nation even if it is a collection of transfers, including two starters following Hodge from Denton. Ohio State faced a non-conference schedule graded at #354 nationally as the promising offensive results aren’t likely to hold up as the schedule stiffens.
